When you promote a site that gives you exclusive content for advertising...

...do you also expect access to the Member's Area? And if you use the argument of "I want to make sure the Member's Area is ok so retention stays good.", would screenshots or a one day pass be acceptable? What about an e-mail letting the affiliate know there has been an update so they get a reminder the site is being properly maintained and updated?

Why not just give them access. I have passwords for all sites I promote, even pay per signup sites.

Yes, only problem is you will get wankers who just want to look and not promote. Another issue that iratates me is you give a "webmaster" a login, then within a week you see it being used by at least 10 different people.

Give them the same logon as the logon they use to access the stats.

That's exactly why I'm asking! I want as many opinions as possible on this. I think for my site I am going to shoot as much extra content as possible to give promoters a better variety being they know there traffic best and will know what will get the click-throughs and hopeful joins. BUT, I don't want to do all of that if they expect a pass and want to use all the content that the Members have had to pay to see.

So if we use screenshots and update e-mails that should satisfy the argument of reliability and truth in advertising issue. Or am I way off base on this idea?

Right, but why do you have the access? To verify the Member's Area conditions or to browse the site?

For content to promote the site with.

That's a good way to at least know who is logging in using which pass, plus easier for the affiliate to remember.

No webmaster is giving away the password if it's also the webmaster stats password.

OK, than back to my original question. If you were given custom, exclusive content to use for promotion, would you still demand a pass?

Excellent point.

If its a share program, yes.

If its a pay per signup program, not needed, but needed if there is more content in the members area than the program gives.
I want all the content available :P. Member area content is gold for conversions if no one uses it. Just limit that access to loyal webmasters.

FuqALot 05-21-2004 11:05 AM

You can always set a download limit on any account anyway.

Good suggestion, I was thinking the same thing today.

I don't have much interest in downloading porn. I have asked for passwords to view a few sites in my day and I usually took a 10 minute look and then never used the pass again.

Now if it's a 100% exclusive site that gives you a pass to grab content for galleries...that's nice because then you can use random pics from a 100 picture set and not get automatically rejected by tgp scripts for using the same 15 pics and another gallery maker (when programs only put 15 pics in a set of free content, it's pretty much useless...give at least 30-40 pics per set so gallery makers can pick 15 at random to use).

Sweet, thanks for your reply! :thumbsup

Are you talking about an FTP account?

No just a password to access the site. Download limit is possible.
