Why not use quicktime?
 

I was playing with doing some encoding in quicktime and I was very impressed. Why would one use quicktime as the encoder of choice for a site? I figure everyone has it.

I like quicktime .mov's for the quality.. but the software isn't pre-installed for most people. So its one more step..

do you have stats on any of your sites which show how many people have the QT plugin?

it's small, i haven't checked in awhile but it's small.

MPEG-1 - the overwhelmingly most popular format still. tho i think there are some connoisseurs out there that want DivX in broadcast quality but most guys just want a good MPEG. Mpegs are playable without hassle by 99% of surfers.

Quicktime is not bad but I prefer .wmv files

Say what you will about wmp, but it is the best. And wmv compression is great.

Quick compression is nice but thier player sucks.

it's the best there is, you ever think for a minute to realize that windows and microsoft is the problem, not the player. that MS does everything they can to hinder quicktime and real on their platform.

im not commenting on the quality abilities, just their 'Q Factors'.

I wouldnt doubt it, but both real and quicktime do the same thing when you install them on your system.

But the point, using wmv , means one less step for the surfer to see video (nnost surfers anyway) Quciktime is good to offer in addition to windows media format. Whats the point of real player?

They most definitely are better than quicktime.
Do an easy comparison test..encode a movie in quicktime, and use the SAME bit rate with wmv9 or divx..you will not only see the higher quality of the video, but also smaller file size.

And it has been my experience that the surfer will also pay for a video that is larger in byte size as long as the QUALITY is better too.

I really hate Quicktime and Realplayer, I dont want to have 3 different media players installed.

Use Quicktime Alternative and Real Alternative to play these files in WMP.

wmv: great compression, ugly movies and not crossplateform evn if mac version exist. Streams takes ages, and require MS OS to run And VERY VERY bad security. :321GFY

Real: compression suck goats in hell, ugly quality, but faster start for streaming.:321GFY

Quicktime: fair compression (supports many formats such as the latest 3gpp for cell phones and mepg4 clear crytal quality), very cross plateform. You can customize skins etc...

Most people who blame qt because the don't know how to use or setup quicktime! Using it just exporting to mov sucks, there're a lot of options to optimise the size for dl or for the stream.

We use quicktime stream servers using rtp/rtsp it free and easy to setup. It runs on OSX server, linux, solaris, and winblows.

I have always used wmv 9 but for shits and giggles I tried qt and it looked good and I didnt have to tweek it like wm9.

Looking at my logs on our member server about 3% use QT, for us it's a waste of space and time uploading the QT format, oh well trying to keep the 3% happy :)

I simply don't like that standard.

It's time and money to give the minority this feature, the players are all free, for 3% of the surfers it may not be worth the effort to give them QT anymore, this is the same reason we stopped providing Real Player, no one complained.

2 things:

1-quicktime doesn't only play mov files but many other formats.

2-Ignoring more than 150 million potential users is a choice. I don't ignore them, it's my choice.

About the complains, do you think a guy is going to complain? Not sure he will switch before registering that's sure. :)

Compression quality to file size is excellent. Plus its readilly playable with 99% of all windows systems.

i like quicktime... lot of movie trailers prefer to use quicktime because of it's great quality...

Never said I ignore them what I am saying is the bottom wont be affected, which means QT is just a waste of my time.

well if you mean wmv9, microsoft finally put out an update for mac users to play wmv9 a few months ago. It obliterates the need for quicktime, unless you have an older Mac 0S.
