Seeking advice: Photo/Video size for paysite
 

I am just designing a new paysite. Here is the size/format I am planning to offer my content in:

Photos:
JPEG
Small: Height=650
Large: Height=950

Videos:
Quicktime MPEG-4 (.mov)
Small: 240x160
Large: 360x240

In our niche fetish sites we have 800x600 pics in galleries and 1200x800 pics in downloadable zip archives. Members love it!

We will however make new sites with only one size pics: 1024 pixels.

Videos we usually only have in one format and size. That is MPEG-1 in VCD-quality. That means that one minute will be almost exactly 10 Mb. Members love it!

However, I am sure we can compress the videos some more without loosing too much of the quality. We are searching for the best software for that, Cleaner seems to be a good choice so far.

Our clients were all asking for 1024 x 768 Jpegs for images.

Videos:

Size: 640 X 464

Video Sample size: 24 bits

Data rate: 129 Kbs

Frame rate: 29 frames per second

Video Compression : DivX Codec

Audio Format: Mpeg-layer 3


90 min flick = 800-900 megs

Photos: not so important, they are now just the preview to the video.

I put a poll on the first members page and 90% prefer the full videos to the photos, small clips, live shows, on line magazines, etc...

Got to give them what they want and what they pay for !

Regarding the videos I would recommend to go for WMV (which could be used by 98% of your users) or to MPEGI (100% can watch it - but much larger file sizes for the same qual as wmv)

Use in future the PAL Standard, which does not matter for computers, but it will be shown at 353x288 pixel which is usually enough and if you encode the video with at least 340kbit/s they can watch it also at full screen

Yeah for paysites you should stick to at least 1024x768 resolution for pics..
