Digital Camera Opinions

I am shooping for a new camera but i am having a really hard time choosing one...
I liked KODAK DX6490 before i played around it with it and the top cnet rated cameras are not very good according to users opinions...

So can you suggest a camera for me
i am planing to spend around 400usd
i don't need more then 4-5 megapixels
i need at least 3 zoom
and lcd shouldbe more then 1.8"

any sites that give a good digital camera comparisons would also be helpful... something like cnet.com but which give better reviews

I have a minolta dimage a1 and although its a little more than 400 dollars ($598-650) It takes some damn nice pictures. tons of features 5 megapixel, etc..etc... here are some samples of pics I've taken with it. These were reduced for the web but they give you an idea of what the original 2560x1920 res pics look like.

I have a canon D60... love it.... can find them for around 1500... if you shop around.

It's an 8 MP, but we just bought the new Sony F828, and we love it.

Nikon coolpix 4300. 4.0 megapixel and freaking rocks. I have 128 MB card and it holds about 100 pictures. I do not do content this is for my use. I just bought a second one for a friend I like it so much.

I've researched them all:
Minolta A1 - DON'T GET IT; reason being that the battery sucks that comes with it. When you have this camera always make sure you have an outlet near by to charge or a bunch of backup batteries

Canon A60/A70/etc - DON'T GET IT; reason being that within a year you'll find a wonderful error with the camera (E18 error). Which deals with the lens of these poorly constructed cameras. Pretty much all of the cheaper digital cameras by Canon (under the Rebel) will experience this error.

My recommendation would be the Sony F717. Sure you need memory sticks, but they're only $10USD more than a CF/SD card at your local store, eBay would be even cheaper. There is also a great flash, the Sunpak 383, that goes very well with the F717.

Research before you buy :)

The F-828 is the replacement for the F-717. It's an 8 megapixel, has a 4-color sensor, and it uses Compact Flash and Memory Stick. We love ours!

What in gods name do you need 8 megapixels for? Are you doing photos for billboards or something?

not true. I had mine on nassau for over 4 hours and the battery was still charged when we got back on the ship. That was a single battery. but I also have the BP-100 battery grip that holds 2 batteries and extends the grip so you dont have to change batteries but around every 9 hours.

if your budget is 400 go to ebay and find a used canon G series camera. that will give you best bang for the buck image quality wise.

"I had mine on nassau for over 4 hours and the battery was still charged when we got back on the ship". So what? I can put my 717 in my backpack, go to florida for a week, come back, and my battery will still be charged.

Check www.steves-digicams.com for great reviews.

I have a Pentax Optio 550 and LOVE it. I think the LCD is only 1.5" though.. one of my only complaints.

We shoot most of our stuff at 3 megapixels, then reduce to 800x600 for the sites. We keep the 3 MP originals for a rainy day, though. But, when we are shooting for boxcovers, we shoot at the full 8 megapixels. Print requires a much higher dpi, and we use 100% digital now instead of the chromes.

Cyborg 2.0 05-19-2004 06:08 AM

i don't need a 8 megapixels - i dont want to pay for something i won't need; i had 3.1 before and had to reduce pics to send to my friends

about the minolta dimage a1 are u happy with the flash and the view finder? also is it easy to travel with it?

i'll research other camers later today and post more questions

Excellent camera. I use mine for when you don't want to lug a big one around to parties, events, etc. Nice and compact and the picture quality is outstanding.
