German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder was slapped in the face by an unidentified man at a party reception of the ruling Social Democrats, police and witnesses said on Tuesday.

: "A man aged about 52 years jumped up and struck the Chancellor in the face with his open hand," a spokesman for police in the southwestern city of Mannheim said.
