Gabriel 05-17-2004 01:28 PM

The scam used to be, "we just picked up some speakers from the factory but they gave us extra and didn't notice it. We need to unload these before returning to the store where our boss will notice."

You could sell them anywhere from $100 - $200 each and still make a profit. They were cheap speakers from China.

MattO 05-17-2004 01:28 PM

you can pick up those speakers on Ebay too now, they print up pretty slick brochures for them... real crap, about as good quality as a plastic cup with wires glued to it.

beergood 05-17-2004 01:31 PM

I always knew that was a scammed but never really bothered to look up where they came from etc. Good thread. People always drive around the LSU campus trying to pawn that shit off on people. Funny.

skillfull 05-17-2004 01:32 PM

I've never head of anyone pulling that one firsthand up here.

Ironhorse 05-17-2004 02:18 PM

You get what you pay for..

DirkG 05-17-2004 02:28 PM

I've had this happen to me 3 times a long time back.
Then I went over to a friends house and saw the speakers.
He got them with the same story. Big speakers, 15in woofers, nice wood cabnets, built in selectable cross-overs. The speakers sound awesome. He paid $200 for both I think. That was 10 years ago maybe. They still rock in his basement and shake his house.

Shap 05-17-2004 02:31 PM

I had that happen to me. I bought the speakers and they kicked ass. Still kick ass today. :thumbsup

maxdaname 05-17-2004 02:31 PM

The smile on that guy's face is priceless!!:1orglaugh

Mr Cheeks 05-17-2004 02:48 PM

damn.. i got approached 4 times in different parking lots with people selling "left over speakers". the first time around i said i was not ineterested. but when i got approached again at a Cosco parking lot, i figured there was something fishy, and took time to listen to what the guy had to say, just to try and figuring out where the scam was.

but the one that been puzzling me lately is the Armani leather jacket one.
once at a gas station in LA, and another at a gas station in Vegas. so both time, some doodz in a rental approach me and tell me, in a rather real italian accent, that they just finished a fashion show and were given some expensive leather jackets as gifts.
now, they claim that customs in Italy have a quota on how many designer stuff you can bring in the country. but check this out.. they both tell me the story about not being able to pay their rental car fees because of credit card issues and just need to luiquidate the jackets for whatever price i thought was fair and blah blah.
the only thing though, the jackets did not look like they were made in China. it looked and felt like good quality leather. but i just don't know at what level they were tryin to pull the scam from. 2 different states, same circumstances and same speech. it's gotta be a fucken scam..

beemk 05-17-2004 02:50 PM

theres these guys near me that do the same thing "these are commercial speakers, better than bose". i just laugh at them.

gornyhuy 05-17-2004 02:52 PM

Its always the SAME EXACT VAN too... so funny.

I've been approached by them at gas stations and burger kings and even university parking lots... :1orglaugh

abadfish 05-17-2004 03:05 PM

This happened to me twice when I lived in Dallas, the first time I actually needed speakers so I pulled over to let them pitch it to me (We were stopped at a light) and then they even put them in my trunk and told me i could get some money at an atm. I pretended to get money out and told them that I was overdrafted (I felt like I was going to regret the purchase) they told me they were brand new, left over from a job, if they bring them back to work their boss will just give them away or some shit, so they have to sell them before...

I thought about just driving off with the speakers in my car when they got distracted, but I didn't. I just told them I couldn't get the cash and no thanks... So do they just get these cheap speakers online, rent a uhaul van (white) and then drive around and make a quick dollar? I never knew it was so common... I think I saw them in Dallas 3-4 times, different people each time.

Heard the same pitch from someone in a Seattle parking lot about 15 years ago. That scam must really work for it to never go away.

KCat 05-17-2004 06:06 PM

I haven't heard this one. Too cold to sell shit out of vans in Canada? :)

StickyGreen 05-17-2004 06:07 PM

Dude got owned.

There was a 'scam warning' about this in Aus on a popular current affairs program. The guys were hanging around in shopping mall parking lots and offloading shitty speakers.
