Iraq's Civil War & The US's Civil War

We shouldn't expect Iraq to be an instant fix with its diverse ethnic tribal divides. Nothing is going to happen overnight there. I'm sure we're looking at 3 to 5 years minimum until that country starts to stabilize and can function democratically in a somewhat peaceful manner.

I was thinking about the US Civil War recently in comparison. We spent 4 years fighting each other in this country for power. 1861 to 1865. Hard to fathom number, but 620,000 Americans perished in that war fighting each other. 50,000 were left as amputees. Hundreds of thousands scarred and injured for life.

So in all fairness, to expect Iraq to solve its power struggling overnight isn't very realistic and we should accept the fact its going to stay messy for quite awhile.

How long did we stay in Germany and Japan after WWII? Years.

And look at Germany and Japan right now. They seem to be doing fine.

In fact, you might even be able to say that Japan won WWII.
