I think a one-off membership fee would put off many of the people who arent involved in any aspect of the business. (a good thing). Although it is worth considering that GFY probably makes money on the ads, which are reliant on the traffic and activity...

Some things won't work unless they are free... There is a reason why google, yahoo, and dozens of other sites are free...

upsells to certain features, like search or maybe ability to have a sig for example, is a different story though...
