Seagate : top of the line hd's?

I hear mixed thoughts on this.

I just put in a Barracuda and things look juicy.

Anybody have input if they evr had a barracuda or any other seagate one?

The dipshit at Compusa ddint have a fucking clue about anything i was asking him.

Sosa 05-16-2004 09:19 PM

We use the Barracuda 80 gig drives in new computers that we build. Maybe 1 or 2 out of a hundred have gone bad.

Stallion 05-16-2004 09:20 PM

What size did you go with Juicy?

James White 05-16-2004 09:21 PM

I used to build computers for a living. I stopped using Seagates, had a lot of problems with them having disk errors after they got semi-filled up. Western Digital is the way to go.

the older models have this problem accroding to one of my parts guys.
I bought a 120GB seagate a couple of months ago and it just as good any one of the WD 120Gb drives I use
I use them external enclosures and I write and wipe them pretty often and no problems as of yet

:thumbsup

Don't know now. And I still buy them. My father design the originals...is there a bigger word for a perfectionist? :)

crockett 05-16-2004 09:33 PM

I never like Western digital but I went with their new Raptor 10k RPM drive.. It comes with a 5 year warranty so I assume they expect it to last..

edit

reason I post that is get one of these for your main drive (IE drive with OS) then get a larger drive for storage. You don't want a 160 gig drive as your main one.

Yes, seagate very nice hdd

chupachups 05-16-2004 10:03 PM

Always trouble with Seagate and Maxtor, none with Hitachi and WD.

EviLGuY 05-16-2004 10:04 PM

I dont think there is a brand right now that you would call top of the line..

They are all pretty much the same.

If you want good performance get one with an 8mb cache instead of a 2mb one.

Vitasoy 05-16-2004 10:07 PM

All I know is they're the most quite hds out. :)

Maxtors are bottom of the barrel shit, but I'm surprised you'd lump Seagate with them... For me it's the other way around, WD crap and Seagate awesome.

using a 160 as a main drive is ok just a matter of how you partition it 10-12 gig for the primary to keep programs loading fast then 10 gig extended for windows swap file the use the rest for what ever

newsdude 05-16-2004 10:30 PM

I only use Seagate. :)

KMR Stitch 05-16-2004 10:36 PM

2x IBM/Hatchi 123.5GB's 7200RPM

2x and WD 80GB 8mb buffer 7200 RPM

I might try out a RAPTOR 15000RPM 36.5 GB's = 200.00

KRL 05-16-2004 11:02 PM

I bought a Seagate 160Gb external drive recently. So far its fast, quiet and stylish looking. Check it out.

Juicy, want something that isn't going to fail for 3-5 years?

Hunt around Pricewatch, buy all the IBM drives you can get your hands on, I run all my mission critical equipment on IBM drives. :thumbsup

IBM unfortunately has gotten out of the drive business, they are/were bulletproof!

Seagates are fine if you don't mind replacing hardware every couple of years.

pure energy 05-17-2004 02:28 AM

I have used Maxtor and Seagate so far. I got less probs with Seagate :)

Shonine 05-17-2004 02:31 AM

I put a 120 gig Barracuda in my new machine that I built 3 months ago. So far :thumbsup

dicknixon 05-17-2004 03:52 AM

I've lost maxtors, seagates, and IBM drives. . .the only HD complany that hasn't fucked me has been WD . .and I have 12 - 13 of them . . not a single crash (special edition ofcourse)

TurboTrucker 05-17-2004 03:58 AM

I've never had a problem with Seagate.

newsdude 05-17-2004 04:00 AM

That 160GB External HDD of Seagate looks pretty cool!
