some of this shit I don't need, like the keyboard, floppy drive, etc.... but it won't let me remove them, I guess because they're basic components.

No, I am not gonna spend a month piecing shit together from 19 different parts houses. I want something huge, speedy, and soon.
If anyone knows of a better system or a better deal on something similar, I'd love a heads up on it.

If you're ordering from the DELL website, try this coupon code:

3MNP23RF1MBBS3

make sure no space at the end

supposed to be 10 percent off any dimension over 1K

Theo 05-13-2004 04:48 PM

they offered 800 gig harddrive, but I only got one 120 because I have a crate full of external 250s I use, so I don't need the HD for anything but the OS.

Amp 05-13-2004 05:19 PM

forgot to mention, currently DWMX takes even longer to shut down. It's a full 10 minutes, sometimes longer for DWMX to close. Don't really understand that, but that's the deal. And switching from one site directory to another within it, takes about 5 minutes. (not loading the site cache)

Amp 05-13-2004 05:40 PM

I found a better system.... dual P4s, still 4gb of RAM, RAID setup, XP Pro.... check it out

yeah i agree, thats a lot of GB.

i said the RAID for having higher speed. I'm not exactly sure how the system works, but I was told it doubles performance.

sandman! 05-13-2004 05:49 PM

you can save about $500 or more on the memory if you dont buy it from dell and get the same exact memory they will ship you.

good point.... I forgot about Crucial. I love Crucial.

nathan_f 05-13-2004 05:59 PM

amp, are you running norton?

if so, exclude the dwmx folders... (not sure if this will work, but it's worth a shot..)

nope. I don't run anti-virus at all.

on the memory, Crucial only offers the 512m DIMMs, and the system only has 4 banks, so I'd be stuck at 2gb of RAM..... rather have the 4GBs....

Jer 05-13-2004 06:04 PM

I need a new computer, but they are fucking expensive here :(

ahhh, yep, I found 'em. Still way cheaper though. Dell wants $2900 for 4GB. That's a huge difference.

The IBMs are too overpriced. One of their best systems is over $26k and still isn't the machine this Dell is.

No
you go to kingston.com and find the part # for the memory you need then you go to pricegrabber.com seach by part # usually is about 50% of what dell wants so if your memory is $1000 from dell it will cost you around $500 serching for it on pricegrabber :)

I just got very close to the same a couple weeks ago. Not that much ram though only 1 gb and a 250 GB Hard Drive.

I was really surprised how much the sucker weighs!

lol I upgraded from a 500 mhz processor. What a difference.

yeah, just found those.... the 1GB non-ECCs are only $308 at kingston! That's less than half what Dell gets. :thumbsup

you have no idea what these machines are capable of. I have two of them, one as a fileserver, and the other as an encoding box. trust me, you need to do a little more research on them before going with a dell. you will not be sorry.
