Need network HELP!!!!!!!!!!

Im trying to get my router setup and can't connect to the internet.

I have a Linksys BEFSX41 firewall router and connecting to BellSouth FastAccess DSL.

I can get the modem talking to the router and pull up the linksys setup page 192.168.1.1 and selected PPPoE and put in the username and password on the Bell account but it says it can't connect.

I set my Local Area Connection's TCP/IP as follows

ip 192.168.1.2

subnet mask 255.255.0.0

default gateway 192.168.1.1

But that is the next set after I get the router talking to the modem fully....

:helpme

You don't want to be doing that. A router assigns IP addresses to the
machines plugged into it.

Set Local Area Connection to Obtain IP address automatically.

any reason your subnet mask is not 255.255.255.0?

steve90 05-13-2004 02:06 PM

the router should use DHCP and automatical assign you Ip's

if you wanted your network to use internal address like 192.168.x.x then you whoult have to use NAT(network address translation) on the router

I couldn't get the linksys setup page without setting the ip and subnet...tried it with obtain ip already and yes the subnet was set at 255.255.255.0

You want to make sure you reboot between the changes.

Router set to PPPoE (igf that's what Bell told you) and Windows
set to obtain IP automatically.

I did that.... shut down the machine, router and modem... turned on modem first, then router then first computer...still couldn't get the router to connect to the modem

You don't have to use that or set it up, the router is
set default to use DHCP.

It sounds like you may have played with the router settings
too much.

With the power plugged into the router still, push and hold
the reset button for ten seconds. This will put the router
back to default settings.

Make sure Windows is set to "obtain automatically"
reboot
go into the router again (192.168.1.1 in browser) and select PPPoE
again (and user:password if necessary).
No other settings.

Q U E S T I O N

How do I set up an Bell South PPPOE account with the Linksys Etherfast Cable/DSL router?

A N S W E R

The following article will walk you through connecting Bell South with PPPoE step by step:

Connecting your DSL modem to the router

1. First connect directly to your DSL modem without the router and verify that you can get on line.

2. Once you've verified that you can get onto the internet without the router please proceed. If you can not please contact your ISP for further assistance.

3. Now unplug the Ethernet cable that connects to your DSL modem from the back of your computer.

4. Take the connection that you just unplugged from the back of your computer and connect it to the WAN/Internet Port of the router.

5. Take a different Ethernet cable and plug it into port closest to the WAN/Internet Port, or into the LAN port.

6. Look on the front of the router. The following lights should be illuminated:

- Power

- WAN/Internet Link

- Link/Act (On the port that you connected your computer to)

- Note If other lights other than Link/Act are illuminated on this port, that is normal

- You may have a few other lights illuminated depending on the model number router you have, but the 3 above must be illuminated for proper connection.

7. Hold the Reset button on the router for 30 seconds or more

8. Restart your computer

Configuring the Router

1. Go to your desktop and double click on Internet Explorer (Located on the Start Menu in hahahahahahas XP)

2. When "Internet Explorer" opens type http://192.168.1.1 into the "Address" bar and click on Go

3. The "Enter Network Password" hahahahahaha will appear.

4. Skip user name and type admin (admin is the default password) as the password, and click OK

5. Scroll down on this page and look for (on older firmware) PPPoE or select the option for PPPoE under "WAN Connection Type/Configuration Type"

6. The following are the different formats for user names you might run into with Bell South. These differ by area. If one fails please try the next:

a) Username: user

b) Username: [email protected]

c) Username: eln/user

d) Username: eln/[email protected]

7. Select the option for "Keep Alive" with a redial period of 20

8. Click on the Apply button.

9. Then click on the Continue button

10. Exit Internet Explorer

Power Cycling

1. Shut down your computer

2. Unplug the power from the router

3. Unplug the power from the DSL modem

4. Wait for 30 seconds and re apply power to the DSL modem

5. Once the lights on the DSL modem stop blinking power up the router

6. Start up your PC

Checking your Connection to Bell South

1. Go to your desktop and double click on Internet Explorer (Located on the Start Menu in hahahahahahas XP)

2. When "Internet Explorer" opens type http://192.168.1.1/Status.htm into the "Address" bar and click on Go

3. The "Enter Network Password" hahahahahaha will appear.

4. Skip user name and type admin (admin is the default password) as the password, and click OK

5. On the left of the "Status" page you will see "PPPoE Enabled", and to the right you will see the Status of the connection. It can be one of the following:

- Disconnected

- Connecting

- Connected

6. If the status is "Connected" you should be able to browse the web, if not reboot your computer

7. If you get an error message please repeat the "Configuring the router" and "Power Cycling" steps with a different username.

- If all four connections fail then please see our knowledge base articles on the error you're getting.

I reset the router already...little red button on the back...

Linksys has problems with some DSL and Cable networks - Youc an call Bell and they will walk you through setup.

My suggestion is trash the Linksys. I don't care who owns them now.

Buy a Netgear and use the auto setup Wizard. Netgear has better compatibility and is more reliable is my opinion. My :2 cents: They are worth the $ you spend now to avoid problems and ease of use etc.

I don't know that model specifically by heart but where ever
the rest button is it says "reset" above or below the little hole.

With many PPPoE providers you may need the "service name" and/or
a special IP address to enter.

I'd hit the reset button still and get on the horn to Bell support and ask
then the settings you need for their PPPoE service and your Linksys.

Also when I was talking about "Obtain IP address automatically" I thought
you were talking about the hahahahahahas setting in TCP/IP...if so that should
be set to obtain automatically until Bell tells you otherwise.

My uncle has SBC Yahoo DSL and I didn't have to fill in any of the host/service information. Although you do need the username & password to be correct.

Your right it should but with PPPoE providers you never know
how-the-fuck they setup their shit service and servers.

The only way out is a support call if you can't work out the
usual routes.

Ice 05-13-2004 02:51 PM

okay still didn't work... everything is set to obtain ip auto and the router won't connect... Im calling bell now. I try not to deal with tech support too often cause they are morons...

SCtyger 05-13-2004 02:56 PM

i've had a couple Linksys Routers die on me as well...

Netgear only now... they look much cleaner too.

anyhow.. make sure your user name is input correctly.. i have SBC dsl .. and i have to use the whole name:

[email protected] .... instead of just "mylogin"

good luck.
