yeah i went for it once and it backfired. i asked out the best friend of the girl i was seeing and she went and told the girl all about it. Needless to say neither talked to me after that.

That is a tough situation. If you have to hang out a lot and she does flirt it makes things real weird, and unless you friend is oblivous to the world he will catch on. Depending on the type of guy he is (not the sharing type) all hell can break loose.

I fucked up a good friendship once screwing around with his girl (in my drunken stupid years). Never again its not worth it. The women come and go a good friend is hard to find.
