REGINA - Hundreds of internet users in Saskatchewan are getting a nasty surprise when they open their phone bills this month.

They've been victims of a scam that is quietly racking up hefty long distance charges without the customer's knowledge.

Sherri MacLean has dial-up internet service from SaskTel. She says her most recent bill had 20 calls to a small island off the coast of west Africa, Sao Tome, that cost nearly $700.

"I didn't make these calls," says MacLean. "I didn't even know where Sao Tome was."

MacLean called SaskTel to complain about the bill. When that didn't get results, she raised her case with the Opposition.

Mike Anderson of SaskTel says other telephone companies are splitting the cost with customers who have been scammed.

He says the government's phone company will do the same for the 700 SaskTel customers who were scammed out of $40,000. SaskTel will pay half of that bill, as well as start warning customers of the scam.

Anderson says people get caught by clicking on those annoying "pop up" hahahahahahas that appear on some internet sites, from pornography to gaming sites.

The hahahahahahas contain a lot of fine print that Anderson says many people don't read, and they end up unknowingly accepting a program that changes the computer's dial-up setting and places long-distance calls.

"It's almost like a virus," explains Anderson.

But MacLean says none of that happened in her case, and she's not paying for something that isn't her fault.

The Opposition says this scam has been around for months and SaskTel should have warned customers a lot sooner.
