Torture and abuse

Though interrogation methods used by the US Army is not in my field of expertise...having gone through the Army's SERE School I am somewhat familiar with the methods used.

Having said that...prepping those that are subject to interrorgation is SOP. Prepping does not include actual physical torture...although some methods may actually be physically painful in the sense that it will tax the muscles of ones body. Physical torture "bamboo under the nails" type of thing is not allowed and it is not productive...because the reliability factor of information obtained through the use of physical torture is low.

Prepping does include...a certain degration factor and a certain deprivation factor...in order to break down ones mental resistence. Subjectively some may call the levels of these methods "abuse" and others may in fact call it "torture"...but none the less there exists SOP for the interrogation of prisoners...and it is a necessary thing.

tor·ture ( P ) Pronunciation Key (tôrchr)
n.

Infliction of severe physical pain as a means of punishment or coercion.
An instrument or a method for inflicting such pain.
Excruciating physical or mental pain; agony: the torture of waiting in suspense.
Something causing severe pain or anguish.

a·buse ( P ) Pronunciation Key (-byz)
tr.v. a·bused, a·bus·ing, a·bus·es
To use wrongly or improperly; misuse: abuse alcohol; abuse a privilege.
To hurt or injure by maltreatment; ill-use.
To force sexual activity on; rape or molest.
To assail with contemptuous, coarse, or insulting words; revile.
Obsolete. To deceive or trick.

There is a difference...though some may think the difference to be negligible.

It is my understanding that the people involved in the pictures are from a Reservist MP Unit. It is SOP for MP's not to be involved in interrogation...or the prepping for same. It is SOP for MP's to be "keepers" and "escorters" and to maintain good order for those that are confined.

Most that will be Court Martialed will be Court Martialed because this SOP was violated. The first scheduled Court Martial is a Summary Court and the max prison time is 6 months. There are some Article 32 investigations taking place and I suspect that some will receive a General Court and prison time can be lengthy if convicted in a General Court.

There may be some that are actually Court Martialed for having "tortured" and it is my understanding that in a least two cases a capital crime has been committed...but most will not be Court Martialed for having committed acts of "torture".

The CG...that used to be in charge of the "detainees" at Gitmo has been placed in charge of the Prisons in Iraq and he has all ready publically announced that "interrogations" will continue under Military SOP for said interrogations.

Clearly a simple typo.

But glad you felt the need to quote it with nothing possible you could say in regards to the topic.

""We are Muslims. We don't go naked in front of our families. But there we were, naked in front of American women and men," he said, adding that this treatment went on for about four hours as punishment for beating a fellow prisoner suspected of spying for the Americans."

Though some may think it cannot be condoned...it was not without cause...at least in this mans case...and probably others.

'Torture room'

A prisoner released from Abu Ghraib earlier this week told La Repubblica that inmates were kept naked all the time and that air conditioning would be switched on in the winter "to freeze us to death".

"Every evening the soldiers would tell me that they were going to pour hot water and sand into my ears, and sometimes they did. It turned out to be a cement-like substance, and the pain was unbearable," he said.

"I screamed, I cried, and they pretended not to hear and kept on pouring water and sand in my ears through a funnel."

In an unrelated interview to al-Jazeera, Hudhayfah al-Shabib, a Jordanian student who spent some time at the prison, described similar practices to which he was exposed during his detention.

"They would interrogate us for 15 minutes and then move us to the torturing room.

"There they would pour cold water on us and put us naked in front of an air conditioner".

I think it is apparent that "abuse" took place...and further investigation may present evidence that "torture" took place...and I believe at least one investigation has already confirmed that...in at least two incidents...a capital crime was committed (I think that may have taken place in Afghanistan)...and it is apparent that the MP's breeched Military SOP...for MP'S. Such breeches of SOP...take place in every conflict...in one form or another...and even during peace time. The wheels of Military Justice are in motion and I would assume that the wheels of Civilian Justice are in motion as well...because any civilians involved are not subject to the UCMJ. I do not think that whatever resolution is reached in the investigations and whatever punishment is meted out will satisfy you and the other US haters/bashers...but so be it.

As to the videos...I have little doubt that the American public as well as the world will see them...probably sooner rather than later.

The pentagon is also the body investigating the case, I'm sure in Canada you also get access to all evidense in cases before they get to trial? The pentagon have said they were hoping to have the cases prosecuted before the media published the materials in order to not taint the criminal trials.

Point made.
