How about the freak nature of war? have you ever been in a battlezone? witnessed people, friends been blown to bits? if you have you would also know that sometimes fear, anger and avangence makes you do stupid things.
I was with the UN in Bosnia so i aint just second guessing things here.
Just to make sure.... i'm not saying that torture is a good thing and even worse taking pictures of it - i'm just saying watching friends and fellow soldiers die can make people do strange things.
Punishing a few stupid soldiers dosent cure the problem, its like giving pain killers to an aids patient - it might work for a while, but wont cure the problem.

I just because war sucks does not mean you get a free "torture card" to play anytime you wish as a bonus to your G.I. Bill. That is clearly spelled out in many multi-national agreements including the Geneva Conventions as well as military policy and standing orders.
What the fuck is wrong with you man? "my friend got killed today, so i raped a 12 year old. its ok... war is hell"

I never said you should have a torture card, your missing my point here - i find what they did disgusting and unworthy of any prisoner, make no mistake about it.
However as i said earlier, these persons who are put on trial are part of a larger problem. Yes it was stupid and i'm sure many of them who participated in this regrets it looking back on it - but in the heat of things people have a tendency to loose grasp of reality - especially when they havent had prober training which most of the prison guards hadn't recieved.
- and as for standing orders...to my knowledge there has been some talk about wheather or not there was a standing order "to get the prisoners to talk with whatever means they had".
It's war things like this happen, in world war 2 half of the people in battle didn't take no prisoners, they were killed right on the spot so i would say these guys got off easy but it's still wrong.

But his did not happen in a battlezone. This happened in a secure controlled enviroment where only our side have weapons. And from what I understand most of the people being held were not captured after a battle. They were there under suspicion, and/or turned in by other iraqis for reward money, meaning a lot may be innocent victims of profiteers trying to make a buck, or just had an unfriendly relationship with the person who pointed the finger. But if you're an officer trying to sort this shit out and get the country under control, you're going to err on the side of caution and keep everyone confined. During this time, all iraqi citizens should be considered innocent until proven guilty; same rules we expect here.
PS. "avangence" is not a word.
you can take "vengence" on the guy who murdered your lover,
and you can "avenge" your lovers murder.
That's the first time I saw the pissing pic. There are guidelines that these troops are trained on and they really went over the line. Too bad all on America will have to pay for their stupid mistakes.
Okay, first off, I am not trying to justify what has apparently happened over there, but I will point out a coupel of facts.
There was a study done at a major university where one group of college students was put in control over another group of college students to see what the effects of control were. This was supposed to be a two week test, but they had to stop it after one week because the control group started going overboard with the mistreatment of the controlled group.
I have heard of a few of these tests being done, all with the same results. These were not done in a war time environment. What did it prove? Pretty much that it is human nature to take advantage of the situation when one is put in a power situation like that.
Secondly, how many times have you read about college and high school hazing incidents, where boys and girls both went to extreme measures when put in a position of power.
Lastly, would you rather be in a POW camp in Iraq/Cuba, or on Fear Factor?
The pic where the guy is deathly afraid of the dogs is sick to see. Then again, I probably wouldn't have too much compassion for the guy if he tried to kill me earlier.

apparently there are also pics of the dogs tearing into him and/or him laying in a pool of blood after their attack (description seemed intentionally vague); it was not mentioned if he survived or not.

Riddle me this . . . . if the dogs did attack the guy, why are there no pictures of that happening? Does not make sense

They are not releasing all the pics (yet?). The TV news anchor (can't remember which one) said that media reps have seen them and that they 'could not show them anyway, no matter how much you blur or black out' . . usual for-our-own-protection nonsense explaination. I expect they'll end up on the net eventually...
