US Government wants to end porn on Kazaa

May 6, 2004 (NY Post) -- The Federal Trade Commission may wade into the battle on illegal file sharing.

A group of senators recently sent a letter to the FTC asking the commission to investigate "peer-to-peer networks" and, in particular, their ability to let users swap pornographic files over the Internet.

The letter notes that a federal court recently found that certain publishers and distributors of file-sharing software "may have intentionally structured their businesses to avoid secondary liability for copyright infringement, while benefiting financially from the illicit draw of their wares."

The letter notes the increase in pornography and child pornography on peer-to-peer networks, in addition to the swapping of music files.

I can't believe they are still trying to figure this whole "Internet Thing" out years later.

Good news but i am not quite sure that they can stop porn material exchange in Kazaa and other programs that work on p2p

EviLGuY 05-06-2004 11:47 AM

People love their porn.. and the p2p networks are worldwide. I love how the US government thinks they can regulate the whole world.

eroswebmaster 05-06-2004 11:52 AM

While it would help us...LOL...this is stupid for them to believe it's even possible.

The buildings of Sharman Networks, the editor of Kazaa, based in Australia.....

so yea basically america, cos we all know Australia is America's bitch :P

Pornwolf 05-06-2004 12:03 PM

Kazaa is headquartered in Australia and incorporated in the Pacific Island nation of Vanuatu.

They've managed to evade our new media lawsuits so far. Now lets see if they can evade our fanatical right wing Pat Robertson political folks.

Wtf? Where do I get my free porn then?

Rictor 05-06-2004 12:07 PM

A law like that would never pass, at least not on the basis they are trying to pass it on.

Now if they try to forbid it because the users are violating copyright, the same argument the music industry is using, then I can see it holding up in court.

Illicit 05-06-2004 12:07 PM

yes ! conversions would be better :Graucho

That is one direction I think they would take but also I can see them trying the indecency angle and child porn angle.

There's tons of ways they can go to win this one in America as well as encouraging other jurisdictions like Germany to join in.

We can only hope the laws that they come up with to hurt the service don't hurt us as well. It could easily happen. They could piggyback so many laws on this one it's not even funny.

Umm, fasttrack is decentralized. All it would take is for people to keep running the client, and the client as of now is the best file sharing client around.
