Anyone ever quit drinking?

I'm starting to consider quitting for a while. How the fuck do you quit what you do best?

Diabolical Cord 05-06-2004 03:13 AM

It's such a social thing that I can't imagine no longer doing it.

abyss_al 05-06-2004 03:17 AM

Definitely not going to rehab. I just need to layoff but once I start I get totally sloshed..

Diabolical Cord 05-06-2004 03:21 AM

The reason I started my own business is because a regular 9 to 5 job interfered with my drinking habits.

beergood 05-06-2004 03:22 AM

Yeah I work my own hours. My big thing is that getting trashed cuts alot of hours out of my day.

pornJester 05-06-2004 03:22 AM

I quit for a few days a week to get some work done. Tomorrow in Atlanta though I'll be in full drinking force. :glugglug

jimmyf 05-06-2004 03:23 AM

I quit about 25 years ago. Don't get as much trouble now. :Graucho

body 05-06-2004 03:24 AM

irishfury 05-06-2004 03:24 AM

I can quit anything besides smoking ciggies...I use to drink fifth a day I now drink 1 or 2 times a month now if that....I could quit if I had to but I don't see it as problem...

beergood 05-06-2004 03:25 AM

I need to at least cut back. I guess I'll have to hide from my friends.

CuriousToyBoy2 05-06-2004 03:25 AM

My old man always said 3 things to me:

1. Son, NEVER trust a man who won't have a drink with you.

2. My boy, people who do not drink wake up in the morning and KNOW that is the best they are gonna feel all day.

3. If you don't drink, don't smoke and don't do good drugs, you won't actually live longer, it will just SEEM like you do.

:thumbsup

bufferover 05-06-2004 03:26 AM

Jer 05-06-2004 04:18 AM

I haven't even started.

pudcat 05-06-2004 04:24 AM

I stopped drinking 2 or 3 years ago, main reason was that I injured myself when pissed and didn't realise till the next morning and for a couple of months afterwards :(

The only way to give up is to stop, do not ease yourself off, too much chance of having just one more.... and one more......

If you go to the pub, have a Lemon Squash or some other non alcoholic drink, you'll cop a bit of flack from your mates though it dies down pretty quickly.

johnbosh 05-06-2004 04:25 AM

no

ocho-ocho 05-06-2004 04:27 AM

I quit drinking every night, dude, and it works! :helpme

StRoGE 05-06-2004 04:55 AM

one word, WHY?
Why would you want to give up such a wonderful thing?

angeleyes 05-06-2004 06:01 AM

I quit drinking in between conventions and then more than make up for it when they roll around. :1orglaugh

Seriously, limit yourself to once a week or month... find a hobby, start working out... and ONLY drink when you go out, not at home, not with dinner, etc.

=^..^= 05-06-2004 06:02 AM

I dont drink
its really easy - just stop

you wont do it unless you are ready - just liek smoking you got to do it coz you WANT to - not coz you feel you HAVE to :glugglug

RawAlex 05-06-2004 07:26 AM

Okay, here goes:

Quitting is easy. Staying quit is harder.

If you don't want to drink, don't drink. That is the easy part. If you want to stop, you just stop. Unless you are specifically physically addicted, you can stop any time.

Harder is to stop drinking with friends, in social situations, etc. Learning how to say no, how to accept the weird looks when you turn down a drink in favor of a soda or water, etc... those are the hard bits. Removing from your life the places, situations, and circumstances most likely to make you drink is hard and that is where will power is required.

Example: Every Saturday night, you go out with friends to clubs / bars / partying / whatever. You have done this for a couple of years. It means drinks, "who is buying the next round" and all that stuff. People keep buying shots, etc. There is tremendous pressure to KEEP DRINKING.

Finding within yourself the strength to say "I just want a bottle of water, thanks" and to stick with it is harder than just stopping.

If you really want to, you can... 3.5 years now without a drop.

Alex

beergood 05-06-2004 07:29 AM

Yeah learning how to say no is a bitch. Especially when women are involved.

That's almost just as bad for your liver.. haha

I'd just ease back on the drinking, no sence in quitting all together.

loverboy 05-06-2004 07:48 AM

keep yourself busy by working at night and stay, or if you can't, limit certain occassions where there's lots of drinking involved.
