largest capacity portable firewire drives available?

i have a bunch of small portable 60 gig MCE fw drives that i use for traveling. does anything bigger (around 100 gigs or more) exist?

i'm talking about small, portable drives, not desktop fw drives. thanks :)

Nope, I don't think so Quiet. I was searching pretty hard a couple of weeks ago and when it comes to truly being portable 60 gigs is the limit.

That kangaru MattO posted looks nice but I can't really judge how large it is from the pics. Are the connectors there as a size comparison tool or just as a representation of what's included?

jackson 05-05-2004 06:51 AM

odd i remember them having the 250 external it was a little larger than the pocket drive but i know they made one im not sure illl scour the site for you...

i have terabytes worth of space in fw drives. i'm not going to fly around with them, and set them up in hotel rooms though.

goBigtime 05-05-2004 06:56 AM

Quiet -- can't you just get whatever 3.5" HD FW enclosure you like and then slap a 320gig IDE in it?

That's what I did for a couple drives & a DVD-RW here...

Bansheelinks 05-05-2004 06:56 AM

the Lacie 250 gig..............a friend of mine has one and its awesome, with firewire.........inspiring me to get one too

:thumbsup

quiet 05-05-2004 06:58 AM

The kangaru site says the drive is 8x4.5x1 but I don't know if I would trust a company I have never heard of selling a drive for less than half the cost and twice the storage when most known companys like lacie max out at 80gig and sell for around 400 bucks. From what I can find looks like 80 is the max right now.

tranferring large amounts of uncompressed dv from one place to another. also, my 80 gig G4 is close to full, and i like to carry a complete back up with me (as well as one at home of course) at all times.

Sorry that session timed out....

Just search ebay for.... firewire 3.5 enclosure

And then buy a 320gig IDE drive :)

quiet 05-10-2004 12:05 AM

bump. any other ready-to-go 100 gig (or more) portable firewired hd's? i'm about to buy a couple more 80 gig drives, would much rather buy a high quality 100+ small portable fw drive.

arial 05-10-2004 12:10 AM

You can just buy a big ass HD and use this... http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...145-745&depa=0 pretty much turns it into an external usb2.0 hd

They are nothing special, really just a metal box. I picked the iomega and iogear drives over those. The Iomega is very nice and quite fast.

i already have unlimited 60 gig mce drives, that are extremely small. are these 100 gigs, and small? if so, please provide a link, or email it to me :)

Amp 05-10-2004 12:59 AM

I have stacks of 250 gig fw drives.... and they rock. (and they're fully portable)

Amp 05-10-2004 01:04 AM

oh yeah.... hot-swap removeable too.... I can swap out 250 gb drive for 250 gb drive from the 20 I have have stacked up here, in about 3 seconds.

not sure what you mean. i've got tons of desktop fw drives. i suppose they are sort of portable, but i love my mce 60 gig fw drives for travel. they are serioiusly tiny, but work very well.

i just want a 100 gig small ass drive to buy, preferably that runs off the firewire connection and does not require any external power...

what are you using amp?
