Is there really any space for newcomers?!

Well, is there any space for new designers? How can anyone get a job and build a rep if nobody gives him/her a chance?
People see my site and say "not much to see" and think of me as some kid who's just messin' arround. How can I have "something to see" if nobody gives me a chance? I did free stuff, that's done with...
I am a 31 yo husband and a father, serious as cancer when it comes to work, (also a Mensa member), been designing for ages, but somehow people don't take me seriously.

Anyone have similar experiences?
Is there really a way to fight through?

I used to design fulltime for a while, and still do a little on the side for some clients. When I started, yeah it was rough but it gets better once people get to know ya and see that you aint just fucking around. The best thing to do is just build up your portfolio with as many examples as you can. I know that is a bitch when noone is giving you a chance, but just stick with it. Everyone that you see ask for design work, icq them or email them. Talk on each message board, and get to know people. Trade links with some resource sites. I remember I would contact EVERY single person I seen ask for design work, and if you have decent examples to show them, you will get work. Really I made my most money with return clients. I still do work for a guy that I met over 2 years ago.

If you really are a decent designer, it'll work out. I seriously made more money when I was designing full time, than I did with any sponcer. Feel free to contact me if you ever wanna chat :)
