Athletic coaches can play a really important role in helping to mold a kid -- and the behavior of the one mentioned in the article was just unacceptable.

Maybe somebody should send this guy a copy of "Bowling for Columbine".....

You know what. I am so against frivolous lawsuits, but I have to totally agree with you there, Brad. This is awful.

I was made the subject of public ridicule by more than one teacher in my school. I was a big geek, I totally admit that. But you know, some of the stuff those people did really messed me up for a really long time. I had major self-esteem issues for over a decade and only in the past few years have I been able to surpass that. This will really hurt that kid, especially in the long run.

And Sweetums is right about sending them that tape. The really sad thing is that when I saw the report of those kids in Columbine, I was really heartbroken, I didn't agree with what they did one bit, but I understood. I've seen what drives kids to do these things. Either to themselves or to others. The sad thing is that when kids hurt themselves, they are seen as weak. It's a shame they had to go and hurt others for people to finally notice that something is wrong in our schools.

And these coaches will probably get a slap on the wrist for this, but that kid will have to live with that moment of shame the rest of his life. Grrr. :feels-hot

Some people need to just grow up (not the kid). When I was young the way we picked our teams was by having the people that got picked last the day before pick teams the next day never had any fights(well almost none).

I remember the shitstorm that hit my email box when I wrote an article about the Columbine killings and how I sympathetic to Klebold and Harris (I wasn't condoning what they did, but I went to school with a lot of kids who very well could have ended up doing what they did). Kids get picked on and picked on in school and no one does a thing about. Eventually, these kids fell they have nothing to live for and nothing to lose and so they take out a couple classmates with them and then people start asking "why?" and suggest counseling...a little too fucking late

5 years later and I'm still pissed about the whole thing.

Doesnt anyone realize the damage that can occur with taunting and teasing like this?? Hope the best for the kid - he may have wined and been a baby - but there is no need for humiliating him in front of the whole damn school and his peers.

I was on it a few times and it was part of the "Team" mind frame that the team is only as good as the weakest link.

Knowing no matter what there is always a weak link in any team effort you also understood and accepted when ya were the weakest link.

Understanding defeat is just as important as understanding a victory.

Education is showing kids how to be bigger pussies these days than understand what it takes to make it in the world.

that is a great example of someone who has very low self image(the coach). That being said, i also volunteer my time and coach football. you have to remember that 95% of these youth and high school coaches are idiots who were disappointed in their own lack of an athletic carreer. So when dealing w/ a coach who cant seperate himself from the game and take on that mentorship role he will tend to act more like a player than a coach. thus the immature and hurtful actions. I am in no way condoning his behavior, just explaining why IMHO this type of shit happens. that being said no one had better ever do something like that to one of my athletes!

Those coaches should be shot.. in the HEAD.

we had class whiners in our yearbook in middle school. but thats not really the same.

As a father, I literally, with no doubts, would have taken that trophy from my son and started beating the living shit out of the coaches with it. Right there at the ceremony. I would have been so angry I wouldn't be able to think of consequences at the time.

The sad thing man is this shit is condoned by just about all teachers in schools in one way or another.

It's the "positive" peer pressure.

In other words if you are a Goth kid or a "stoner,", they turn a blind eye when the preps, and jocks pick on you...because the teachers want you to be pressured to conform to what they think is "normal."

Those coaches at that school where the upper classmen raped some of the younger boys *as young as 14* with broom handles etc still feel as though they did nothing wrong.

No they may not have said to go out and do this exactly, but the environment they create lends itself to these kinds of things happening.

Kinda like in A Few Good Men..."Did you order the code red?!"

That scene could be played out in just about every adminstrators office with coaches and teachers alike across this country.

That's just terrible.. not giving someone an award would have been bad enough.
