Brian Burke gone - Bad news for Canucks?

I don't see why... it doesn't make any sense. I thought he was doing a great job.

whats this all aboot

Makes no sense at all. He turned the team from laughable to competitive... If they're going to be firing people they should start with Crawford.

The loss in the 1st round wasn't something you could pin on management though... Two key players (Bertuzzi, Cloutier) weren't even there, and other key players (Naslund) weren't playing anywhere near their potential.

By every measure I can think of he was doing a great job. Got the main guys signed up to long term deals at below market prices for what they could command elsewhere; got over 16,000 season tickets sold and 80+ consecutive sell-outs; took the team from a loser to being in playoffs 4 seasons straight. I thought they were delaying because the team was about to be sold. Can't figure out why they fired him.

It baffles me... he got players that people thought were "iffy"... people thought had potential but were no real superstars.

And now? Now we have the top 2 point getters in the league along with a rather large compliment of 2nd liners... the 3rd and checking lines are every bit as good as their 2nd line.

Burke's built up a team that is the opposite of the Rangers...
*low salaries, not many veterans and they win games.*

So why would you let a guy go who can do that?

He was a good GM I dunno why he got booted out of there..

Strife 05-04-2004 01:07 PM

Getting rid of Burke makes very little sense...but the little playoff success and poor relationship with mangement has to play a big part in the decision.

I just hope that they hire David Nonis as Burke's replacement

StuartD 05-04-2004 01:10 PM

Yeah, but I just can't see the playoff performance as being his fault. That's a coach / players thing. They do great in the regular season and then fall apart... the coach should be remedying that... not the GM.

The only thing about the playoffs I could fault him for is Cloutier. He's injured himself the last 3 playoff seasons in a row... as much as no one can be at fault for that, it's still a liability and Burke should have been finding a way to find a more dependable goalie.

But other than that, the playoffs are out of his hand. He built a team that should do well. They're just not.

Bertuzzi being suspended didn't help this season on that, which is entirely out of his hands.
