NHL Is It Fixed??

its a question every true Hockey lover doesnt want to face - the possibility that our beloved game may be rigged.

Several weeks ago someone mentioned it to me and I passed it off as BS - but after sundays game watching the Leafs appear as though they purposely gave up the game and a few others, I am beginning to wonder if some players / teams are paid to throw a game for the promise of future options to win the cup.

Can this be true?

NedFLanders 05-04-2004 06:25 AM

Could be true.... but i dont think we'll ever know for sure.

StRoGE 05-04-2004 06:29 AM

Your just looking for an excuse for toronto losing. Just face the facts, Philly was a better team. If the leafs looked like they gave up its only because they actually realized that they would lose no matter what.

maxdaname 05-04-2004 06:29 AM

Well the team does make a minimum of 1 M$US$ per game, so I guess it wouldn't hurt the team to finish in 7 games...

thats my point - owners make more money if the game goes to 7, so why not throw a game or two in order to pocket a buck or two?

Spunky 05-04-2004 06:40 AM

Yes ,they want to attract more American viewers.

JFK 05-04-2004 06:51 AM

this has occured to me before on occasion, why cant it be scripted like theWWF? The owners draw lots and then play out the scenario accordingly :2 cents: and NO I am not sore about the leafs losing , they sucked and deserved it:ak47:

TheLegacy 05-04-2004 08:14 AM

the odds are like this - every sport today has faced charges of being fixed - or players being paid to throw a game

why is hockey the only one free from this threat??

cant a team player decide to take a few $$$ and accidentally hand the puck off to the opposing team member to score a few times??

Cant a ref who doesnt get paid much accept a few extra $$$ to make a few calls against a team??

Cant owners make a deal to go to 7 in order to increase failing $$$ in their franchise because salaries are going so high??

With players like McCabe there is no need to pay him to "hand the puck off to the opposing team." He does that for FREE!

very true - but that is one example that I am talking about - what if he was paid to play shitty - not the first player in sports who hasnt either betted or accepted money to do so.

Think we need to wake up and smell the Tim Hortons coffee

Chances are that somewhere there are people putting HUGE amounts of money down in wagers on games... and when you have that much money being passed back and forth and put into such a great risk, chances are there'll be someone there with a lot of money trying to fix things to their advantage.

LOL.. you dont have to say sorry (we are all family here when it comes to work and sports) - its just a game, and the most logical answer that you are saying is probably the right one.

It was just an interesting conspiracy theory brought up around a bar room table.

I have yet to decide. I have to pack before I go anywhere, so prolly watch the first period at home and then venture off somewhere else to watch the rest. Then to the old trusty Bovine for more party fun!

mackey 05-04-2004 09:15 AM

Yea I made sure I paid enough to make sure Stevie Y got hit in the face with a puck.. and now his career might be over, again.

rigged? are you serious?

4Pics 05-04-2004 09:42 AM

I dont think so, look at last nights Detroit game, the 1 goal scored was not something anyone could "setup". There were a number of shots cojo could have let in if he wanted to lose.

This year Tampa should win, they have the best goalie and best forwards in the playoffs. No team (other then foreskin/sakic) has 2 guys as good.
