Server NooB Question :)

I want my own dns server for a few new domains of mine
dns1.whatever.com
dns2.whatever.com

what does it take
do hosts offer that in general?
:glugglug

EviLGuY 05-04-2004 02:15 AM

You need 2 IP numbers, and your host can set it up for you no problem.. then when he gives you the 2 ip numbers to use as nameservers you go to the registrar and register the ns1.yourdomain as a nameserver with whatever the first number was he gave you, and same for the second.

Sounds harder then it is.

Any host worth their salt can do that, it's not rocket science. :2 cents:

Actually yuou can do dns for BOTH on 1 ip address.
If you know Linux that is.

Set one on Loopback.

VideoVoyeur 05-04-2004 02:19 AM

Trax 05-04-2004 02:20 AM

cool
one question still left
is this only something for my dedi machines or could i even ask my hosts i only have virtual machines with

:winkwink:

thanks so far

VideoVoyeur 05-04-2004 02:21 AM

No, you can use DNS on dedicated but you can also use a dns on a virtual server if your host has vps setup.

I have seen 1 server with over 50 ip addresses on it.

Wouldn't make a difference really, unless you're wanting this host to DNS work for domains not hosted with them, in which case they may want to pinch you for that.

Your host can:

Use an existing dns server and have your dns requests go there

Put bind/tinydns/whatever on your dedicated machine and run it from there.

Probably a couple other things but that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Like I said it's pretty trivial, less complicated than you may think it is.

Trax 05-04-2004 02:40 AM

perfect
will bug em then :)

Hey Moron, why do you think it doesn't make sense? Not because you can't, but because only a stupid redneck like yourself would do something like that! What the fuck is the use of having both DNS servers on one fucking box??? If your DNS server goes down, there goes all your fucking DNS.

Only stupid morons would do that shit! And yes, you can have as many fucking IP's as you want on a box, but for a company DNS server, you don't want both on one box. Next time say something smart!

But it would be better to give good fucking advice, and I'm sure most would agree with me.

I don't go the scammer route!

some hosts will let you have your own customized dns servers with your domain ask them they might let you, if you are on virtual hosting, if its dedicated and you admin your own box, then of course you can, but like you said you are on virtual, you shouldbe able to control dns through the cp, just ask your host when i had virtual hosting they didnt have a problem with it.

no hurting on asking.

Trax 05-04-2004 03:36 AM

thanks :)
