something i learned today about being white

i went to a furniture place last week to order a new computer desk. i thought i was getting a good deal since it was $20 less than on the manufacturers site plus they paid the tax/shipping.

the place was run by a few vietnamese guys & it just so happens my girlfriend is vietnamese as well. we went in there today and as the guy was talking with her in vietnamese he gave her the "vietnamese" price of $170 compared to the $200 i originally paid.

i find this a lil fucked up, i understand that hey they're both vietnamese & there's some kinship there (he didn't even know her mom purchased all the furniture for her 3 br. house from them) but it's not like i could go into another store and say... "hey man, hook me up with a better price seeing as we're both white".

guess i can (in a small manner of speaking) say i now know what it's like to be discriminated against. discrimination against any race is wrong...it sucks.

Yes, discrimination sucks :(

StuartD 05-03-2004 12:05 AM

white men in vancouver are actually a minority... yet still over 90% of employment listings still say "looking to hire a woman or person belonging to a visible minority"

believe me, I know what discrimination feels like.

reynold 05-03-2004 12:06 AM

It pays well to learn something new each day!

SleazyDream 05-03-2004 12:06 AM

you weren't discriminated against - you got the deal in the end.

if I went in there without your girlfriend, I'd be discriminated against.

BVF 05-03-2004 12:06 AM

You always pay the "white man" price...

Have you ever been to Jamaica? Do you think you pay the same the locals do? Do you think you even pay the same that american Black tourists do?

No matter where you go, the white man ALWAYS pays the most.

Sucks, but get used to it, as we're quickly becoming a minority..

my girl didnt originally come with me... i took her in there to look at another armoire desk i was debating about. she says "there's a vietnamese price and a white price... it happens all the time".

Diabolical Cord 05-03-2004 12:13 AM

Reverse racism rocks.

can i borrow your girlfriend next time i need a desk?

Digipimp 05-03-2004 12:14 AM

it's nothing new, but it's something to talk about when it happens to you?

it has always happened and always will happen, not much we can do about it. it's not only race, it's sex, and other features, fat, tall, short, skinny, handicapped, old, young and plenty more.

Sylver7 05-03-2004 12:15 AM

Furniture is a big mark up item. At least 100%. You should always haggle especially with asians. They love to play the game.

Goose 05-03-2004 12:15 AM

really? I never heard of it...two prices for one and the same item...where are we?

Or you could just go buy it from a white person.

Pussy fuck. Go down there and tell them you will take them to the discrimination board if they don't give you the same price as they do for Asian's. Can you imagine a White guy charging Black people more because they are Black? What are you scared of the little 5 foot pricks?

of course it is. a dollar is a dollar is a dollar. but i'd rather try and work a better deal on the more expensive desk. if i can get $50 - $80 knocked off of it, i'd more than go for it.

webmaster x 05-03-2004 12:22 AM

hmm.... racism.. can we put it aside for the 'good of all?

hydro 05-03-2004 12:23 AM

its weird in america to see that... but it happens ALL the time here in thailand.... even the Massage parlours(rub and tug) and whores have a special surcharge for Non-Asians... they claim its becuase our larger-than-asian dicks do more damage... but i think its because they think we have more money....

but the Japs that come here get priced gouged more than whitey... so i think its a 'how much money they stereotype you as having' thing.

newsdude 05-03-2004 01:54 AM

thatd be racist and someone would find out and start sueing people.

V_RocKs 05-03-2004 02:01 AM

I get all kinds of shit because I am white. Everytime I go outside someone yells out shit like:

"What the fuck you look'n at whitey?"

or

"How does my foot feel in your ass white boy?"

I guess moving to Watts wasn't the smartest thing I could have done, but I am Polish. So no explanation is needed.

shermo 05-03-2004 02:02 AM

It's definitly a common practice. It's just assumed that a person of a different culture will be taken advantagce of, due to lack of cultural knowledge. It's a shitty thing, but it happens. At least you've learned a lesson for the next time you shop. ALways have somebody around that speaks the language!

Yes, I think you're right, I was told that when I go back to Romania after having been gone for 20 years, I will get triple charged by the taxi drivers just because of my accent, and this is from my 'native comrades', so not all of this is racism, even though it seems it might be..:2 cents:

Rictor 05-03-2004 02:07 AM

Down with whitey!

Good idea! :thumbsup

Nicky 05-03-2004 02:11 AM

Oh well, could you afford the extra $30? :winkwink:

true true, still it is discrimination.......:(
