May 1st, 2004 - POLAND joins the European Union !
Today, 15 years after having regained true sovereignity, Poland - together with 9 other, mostly East-European countries, joins the European Union.
Today's EU enlargement is by far the largest and the most important one in EU's history. It is true that the EU is not as perfect as it wants to be perceived, especially now, when we were witness that Europe didn't succeed in the attempt to create its own constitution, nor to develop a common foreign policy. Yet fact is that - form the realistic point of view - there is no better solution for Poland than joining the EU. Staying totally independent is good only for rich countries, or countries where there is clear vision to on how to progress. Unfortunately in Poland, the politicians, more than anywhere else - care only about themselves and not the country's problems. Strenghtening ties with the US has been done is recent years, but this also should not be seen as an alternative to the EU membership. Poland is one of the most loyal US suporters worldwide and the society is also highly pro-American, but yet there is no special treatment towards us from the US. So, joining the EU is a good decision and I am happy about that. :) Sure, not everything will be great, but there is simply no better way for Poland. On a private note - born in a polish aristocratic family and being trained as an expert in the field of International Relations, I was going to apply for a job in one of the EU institutions. Yet, in the meantime I discovered the money making opportunities in online porn and I don't think I am going anywhere soon. This job gives me far more freedom, probably more money and a definitely better environment of more open-minded people than working for the EU would.. :glugglug :glugglug :glugglug |

what is happening is your industry is buying up property here to erect factories as fast as they possibly can. Of course the workers from the new countries are not allowed to come to the old EU to get jobs, but it seems the politicians don't want them to move. Personally I think it was the worse decision they could make, what do the new countries bring to the EU other than cheap labour, cheap property prices and less restrictions? I suppose the burocrats in Brussels think the extra profits made with this new cheap labour, will pay for the unemployment benefits in the old Europe. However you can always go work for them, they are going to be spending 1 billion Euros on translating all the docu-ments, this does not cover the new docu-ments, offices and staff needed for the expansion. So I suppose in ten years we will supporting you. |

calling a still ongoing process not successful seems a tad premature. once the constitution is set up, it' might keep some politicians from hurrying obedience in foreign policy matters as well. :winkwink: |

I am escaped from germany to another (also in the EU) Country, but at least we have here on the canary islands the own way of life........no one gives a shit what the rest wants.....its a part of spain, but you will find on the islands here not a real spain politic etc. So Poland Welcome, but dont be tooo happy....soon your prices will explode and you will wish to get out there.........they will start to share informations about bank accounts and all that shit...... |
Hmmmmmm I am not exactly sure what this means... as I haven't followed what the EU is doing at all.
But congrats. :) |
