W.i.n.d.o.w.s help needed, urgent

Is it possible to reinstall windows w/o hurting the files/apps allready on the disk?
A friend of mine had his computer die on him and theres a ton of important stuff on it

The w.indows cd has a repair operation. You can run it and it just updates all the core files of the OS. Whats broke about it?

xp has a repair function on the cd if you just boot from it

If you are running xp and can do it, restore to an earlier time, if you cant do that, just reinstall hahahahahahas XP.

The shitty thing is it wont even boot.... First there was a BSOD saying "Unknown Hard Error" with no additional data then DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER

Or get the HDD out of the computer....Add it as slave to your, and copy all important data to your HDD, and then try to restore his HDD. That way in case when it goes wrong you always have a backup...And ppl PLS BACKUP frequently :) Really
