I don't do business with AVN because they wouldn't do business with me because Klixxx

I don't do business with AVN because they wouldn't do business with me because Klixxx sponsors me. True story.

They use Microsoftesque monopolistic practices and I won't stand for it. I feel for Duke and Lensman.

so what problem do they have with klixxx?

Could it be that they're in direct competition with each other?

They won't allow their logo side by side with Klixxx because they don't want their brand to be viewed as comparable.

WiredGuy 04-26-2004 10:21 AM

If AVN truly had a good magazine, they shouldn't feel intimidated to put a competitors logo in their magazine, especially if they're being paid to do it. Good for you Rick.

Good for you Rick, If their too insecure to been seen with their "rivals" in business, then why do they deserve business - its what its all about

dropped9 04-26-2004 10:25 AM

Its nice to see that some ppl still have the gusto in this biz... :thumbsup

angelsofporn 04-26-2004 10:28 AM

Well, you could buy about 55,000 high-quality cliicks with it.

AlienQ - BANNED FOR LIFE 04-26-2004 10:40 AM

I am with you Rick on this.

AVN is a poor magazine.

AMADude 04-26-2004 10:47 AM

AVN is arrogant and trying to be a monopoly.

Raven 04-26-2004 10:52 AM

This is more than ridiculous.

There's room enough for both of them, without getting petty.

It's really not a good idea for Dinosaurs to be playing games with CJ. It will come back to haunt them shortly.

When I saw that about a month ago first thing I thought was "Sigh..."

That budget would be better spent on a good Net Campaign for traffic IMHO.

My nets are currently under construction, to be complete with a content store, dvd shop, and paysites.

The Pornslinga you see today is a result of 2 punks who started with NADA, and we are hoping our new website targeted in the adult online commerce sector will be a ccccc-money maker. :)

I watch folks like Rick Latona from a distance, and take the good I see from industry vets. The overtones of this thread are troubling, in the sense that I chose an AVN print campaign initially.

TheFrog 04-26-2004 11:11 AM

There are still reasons to advertise in AVN if they haven't done anything to harm you. Branding opportunities exist.

However, if you are start up you need to be more guerrilla like. I'd go straight to the boards for a more immediate ROI. Keep in mind that only the market leaders have to expand the market to grow. Everyone else must take from the market leader. Go for the quick traffic.

AlienQ - BANNED FOR LIFE 04-26-2004 11:20 AM

The net is literally destroying publications, the net will destory AVN to.

Just give it time.
When video producers realise that Print ad campaigns are a waste in a budget it will be over.

Not many video producers really understand how to use the net but as they step up and another generation of video producers come into play with more tech savey producers it all will be a very very different landscape concerning advertising.

Honest opinion
5K for traffic to a commerce destination selling media is better spent.

wrong, there are none for me now. If Rick says stay away from AVN, I don't do business with them.

Pornwolf 04-26-2004 11:24 AM

$5k spent on the net will make you $25 to $50k if you have something fresh to offer. I understand the massaging distributor aspect of ads in the trades. The net hasn't been able to replace that yet.

Wasn't Lens working on something to fix that distribution problem?

SykkBoy 04-26-2004 12:35 PM

My problems with AVN started when they started putting in nude photoshoots. Not that I mind that, but I'd expect it from Hustler and Playboy, but if I'm reading AVN, I want news and industry issues, not TnA. It just made everything seem less professional.

Kimmykim 04-26-2004 01:00 PM

The biggest thing that AVN has going for them is the trade shows, they leverage those into bigger advertising deals on their print and online mediums.

Can't say as I blame them tho, that's just how business is done.

GTS Mark 04-26-2004 01:04 PM

Hehe sounds like prices at AVN are going to stop dropping, might be a good time to buy some advertising :winkwink:

Mike AI 04-26-2004 01:25 PM

Finally something we agree on.

AVN is no friend of this business. They are only concerned with helping their old school video companies get more business on the web.

AVN is one of the adult webmaster's worst enemies!

Here here. *bangs on table* Besides, it's just a big collection of press releases anyway. At least Klixxx hahahahahas about stuff.

sextoyking 04-26-2004 01:30 PM

Kb,

I give much love to JB, nothing wrong there :)
----------

Mikeai,

yeh AVN is ok you know, I like the reg trade mag and the avn online mag too.

Avn is for web ppl also, but mostly for the retail store owner, distributors, etc. They have had to expand with web sections, etc over the years.

I read through a bit, then skip to the top 10-100 dvd's selling, new products for the toy stores, etc.

But on that thought, if they feel they do not want to be associated with a certain competitor, they have every right to refuse service.

I don't think you guys noted the sarcasm by my statement-

Rick at least didn't- I am not choosing sides here, both magazines offer something for webmasters...

I just recall seeing Rick at every AVN show I go...If AVN were so bad for business why would you continually go to the shows? Are you saying the shows are cool and the magazine sucks?

sextoyking 04-26-2004 01:56 PM

an ad in AVN or another adult industry mag IS a waste of time.
but i disagree with ya on the mainstream magazine part.
this was being said years ago.
hasnt happend yet.
maybe in ten to 15 yrs.
people still like looking through magazines.

Playboy and penthouse took hits.
theyre old school and werent in touch with the younger generations.

maxim, fhm, and a slew of others were launched when most people thought it was crazy because of the the Internet and the "free access" to pics, porn and the like.

those mags outsell playboy and penthouse and are the top selling mags in the industry.

take an ad in maxim, fhm or another magazine like these.

i guarantee the traffic/sign up ratio will blow doors on most online marketers.

i worked for a company that placed and ad for an online casino and the traffic/sign up ratio was insane.

a personal site of mine was mentioned in spin magzine regarding a crank phone call. trafffic was nuts man.

hell, even being mentioned on radio generates healthy traffic as well.

We have advertised in both AVNonline and Klixxx, and I feel our money was better spent with Klixxx.

I'm sure there is a lot of pressure on AVN to please everyone, but I have been personally disappointed with various broken promises and lack of support.

Klixxx on the other hand has gone the extra mile to endear themselves to the adult internet community, and their support of Lightspeedcash is truly appreciated. :thumbsup
