The reader vibrates and the whole hdd vibrates with it (it doesn't contact the platter at all).

The stereo signal is an A/C frequency modulation and the armature is a rotating solenoid. It just so happens to move at a frequency that we can hear. :thumbsup

If you take the cover off a hard drive while its powered on you can scratch some funky ass patterns into the disk while it's spinning by moving your keys or something over the surface. Nice fluid waves appear, tons of fun :thumbsup
