absolutely exit traffic can earn you money. just because they don't want what is on your site doesn't mean they not interested in anything. it just means you need to give them a different option. for example i often a join4free exit console, it's just a simple list of links for other niches. in case the person leaving my site wants some different shit.

Yes exits can make TONS of money. I make the BULK of my money off consoles.

Question is what kind of site is it? Where are the visitors coming from? It's not worth it if you're trying to build traffic with a TGP or something, but with SE traffic like I do you have nothing to worry about.
