New M$ patent: Namespace Vs. Domain Names

While you are busy optimizing your pages for Google, there's a raging controversy over the future of search and browser usage. Microsoft has put in a patent for "Flexible Keyword Searching." What does this mean, and what effect is its application likely to have? Full Story...

Scary. Interesting read - good thread :thumbsup

Bill Gates will own the world before you know it. It seems way too monopolistic in my eyes. I'm not quite sure how they will be able to do this without the entire web community fighting back.

On the flip side of the coin, IE has a built in search function now, and I NEVER use it. Google tool bar :thumbsup

Consider these scenarios: Let's say there are two or more name providers. Let's say that Microsoft has it's own and Netscape has tied up with "XYZ." The Microsoft IE user types in "adult content," and he goes straight to AEBN. The Netscape user types in "adult content" and he goes straight to Webmastercentral. Other, smaller, content providers stand no chance of being found this way. Even more dangerous, let's say that AEBN purchased names from both Microsoft and Netscape; every user would go straight to AEBN.
Smells like shit. Isn't it? :(

Sounds like the old "Real Names" system.

This line from the article is questionable, "adding one more nail in the coffin for Netscape and Google."

One more nail in Google's coffin? Microsoft is trying to catch up to Google in the online world, not the other way around. :1orglaugh

Also, if you type "adult content" into your IE address bar, you will already be shown paid results at MSN - that's been going on for years, right?

Microsoft are superb imitators and an incredible market position .... but the question is if the "real names" concept is viable at all. The now defunct Realnames.com is a good testament to the whole plan :thumbsup
