Should radio censorship happen?
 

If you think about our right to free speech and what it is supposed to be geared toward does that mean that personalities like Stern should be allowed to say whatever they want on the radio?

Some of us love Stern and some of us don't care much for him. Personally, I think he's a funny guy but I don't want my sons listening to his view and treatment of women. I don't want them to form the same mindset that he portrays. I would feel a lot better if he were on satellite radio where they wouldn't have access to him.

I realize it's a parents job to ensure that their children are not doing things they aren't supposed to. But, when they're away from home at school or wherever they do get hold of things like walkman's and can happen across unregulated radio programs. I think that if we can put some of our racier programs and movies behind the cable channel and our paysites behind members areas then we should be able to put the more controversial radio personalities behind satellite where at least it would make it a bit tougher for kids to get access.

Am I just getting old and cantankerous as my next birthday rapidly approaches or should this form of media be separated into a pay to listen and free/tamer areas?

Anyone?

The FCC has ALWAYS controlled the airwaves. It's what the people have decided is best.
Imagining that there is a wave of resentment for what the FCC does is to give too much credence to the rantings of GFY children.

These days it's probably easier for your kids to listen to a filthy internet radio show than to listen to howard stern.

well that may be the case in some households. But in my house the kids aren't allowed on the internet unless they are supervised by myself or my husband with them. Of course, my kids are 7, 8 and 11 and i'm sure that their freedom will increase with age but for now they have no business on the internet without us present. They have also been told that if they are ever caught using a chat room they will not be allowed on the internet outside of a school setting until they are 18 or out of our home.. whichever comes first.

When I have kids I'm going to sit them down and tell them how all the smart people make money because the public will always have to masturbate, laugh or be shocked in some way. Daddy never went to college, he just compromised his morals and look where he is now :Graucho

With censorship, the freedom of speech is being curtailed. However, you can't protect your kids all the time.

Even though censorship for radio stations do happen, your kids will still hear a lot of crap from other sources.

thats what ill tell my kids as well :thumbsup . Im going to teach my children what i learned. The way to get rich is by being at the top. Instead of promoting an affiliate, open up your own sponsor and let others do the work. Or if you want to take a step up, do something like ccbill does

your kids are probably downloading hardcore porn videos off the internet.... Me and alot of my friends were in Jr.High. Educate them and they will make wise decisions, don't censor them... it's a loosing battle.

While I wouldn't advocate censorship, I do havea problem with certain programs. I realize when I listen to Howard Stern, I have a reasonable expectation of his content and wouldn;t allow my children to listen anyways, but if I'm listening toa lighter radio staion and get broadsided with some of this, I can easily change the channel, but why would it be so hard to label programs so I as a parent can make an informed decision.

I try my hardest to be a reasonable and responsible parent (probably shouldn't curse so much around my kids ;-)) but that's not always easy to do without being informed (as reasonably as possible). If I watch a television program or go see a movie, they have a ratings system (which is often flawed but at least a guideline) so I can use that as a guideline.

I'm obviously not a prude and realize my kids are going to hear swearing every day (even at home ;-)) and I can't protect or shield them from everything, but why is it so hard to have a simple content disclaimer at the half hour of a radio program?

Of course, being the easonable parent I am, I'm taking my son to his first metal show: Morbid Angel (but I know going in he's likely to be exposed to profanity, a little friendly violence and a couple drunken idiots)
