Rania al-Baz said her husband, Mohammed al-Fallatta, beat her so hard earlier this week that he broke her nose and fractured her face in 13 places.
...

This time, the mother is quoted as saying, he became infuriated when Ms Baz answered the telephone.

....
'Husband's right'

"It is considered a husband's rights that his wife should obey him," Abeer Mishkhas, of the Saudi English-language newspaper Arab News, told BBC News Online.

"This can involve coercion or violence, and we know that the majority of cases of this kind go unreported and unnoticed."

More and more Saudi women go to civil courts to request divorces on grounds of violence, Ms Mishkhas says.

But they are still not allowed to vote, drive, own a business or travel without permission from a male guardian.

Woman hides valuables in womb
From correspondents in Riyadh
March 31, 2004

A WOMAN in Saudi Arabia has undergone surgery to remove gold items and money bags she had inserted in her womb to hide them from her brothers who robbed her of her inheritance, a newspaper reported Tuesday.

The woman, identified only as "Maryam", had inserted nine rings, three chains, three charms and three bags containing money in her womb, Al-Watan said.

Surgeons at a hospital south of Riyadh removed the objects and placed them in a safe box, it said.

Al-Watan did not specifically say that the woman was Saudi, but newspapers here usually point out the nationality of non-Saudis involved in incidents.

Maryam, who is in her fifties, had been incarcerated in a room by her brothers for 11 years after she threatened to report their theft of both her share of the money left by their father and her deceased husband's inheritance.

Only her sister was allowed to visit her every four or five months, and she survived on bread and the skin of fruit, becoming skeletal, according to Al-Watan.

The report did not say if Saudi authorities were investigating the affair.

Where are all those believers of the " rape rooms" of G.W. B. ???

These Saudis are his friends... and business relations ... aside from being 9/11 highjackers.

Police are looking for Mr Fallatta, an unemployed singer.

There is domestic violence in every country. I wonder what the punishment will be when he is caught.

I doubt these particular Saudis know GWB, and the 9/11 hijackers are dead. So, if Bush announced plans to invade Saudi Arabia you'd support it?

No, but since no later than today the administration admitted that Iraq was all about " Regime change " in the name of the freedom of the " iraqi people " ( amazing how you could fire on them and starve them for 10 years and suddenly they are youre best buddies...lol) , then it would be logical that this administration continue its liberation of " oppressed " people, no?

fire on them and starve them? We established a no-fly zone to protect the Kurds, and we instituted a oil for food program which the UN turned into an oil for the UN officials and money straight to Saddam program. Why is it that it turns out that the UN was totally corrupt and was looking the other way when Saddam was starving his people, but the US is the big bad guy in this?

Get real
