Dog Owners: What brand of dog food is best?
What kind of dog food should I feed my puppy? He is a 4 month old weiner dog/schnauzer mix with a gimpy leg :)

The best thing is to look at ingredients. You want to see things like "chicken" or "beef" instead of "chicken meal" or "beef byproducts" etc. If corn or corn meal is one of the first ingredients, the food is no good.
They put some seriously sick stuff into dog foods. If you're really worried about it, you'd have to hit a dog food store that sells human grade food. Pretty expensive for most people though. |
kibbles and bits
|
Ol' Roy
|
NutroMax is good stuff.. It's all natural with rice in it to aid in digestion and it'll give him a nice shiny coat. They sell it at petsmart and petsco around here.

Does it matter? My dog licks his ass and eats poop, I really doubt he cares about taste OR nutrition!
|
eukanuba or however you spell it is suppose to be good.. -g
|
I've tried them all including the so call good ones which my dog won't eat.
He loves his Alpo mixed with Old Roy's gravy nuggets. http://www.ecuaquimica.com.ec/images/prod_dry_bags.gif |
Iams :thumbsup
|
iams / eukanaba
|
Pedigree.
|
I've tried several for the dog and the cats.. all of them mostly if not all natural.
I've finally settled on a brand called Wellness, but Old Mother Hubbard. Corn is a major ingredient of alot of pet foods. It's not the best thing for them and is hard to digest. Wellness uses barley, oatmeal, and brown rice instead. http://www.oldmotherhubbard.com/dogs..._overview.html They do have a puppy formula. |
it's not the most nutritious but my dogs prefer kibbles n bits.

dogs only live 12-20 years depending on breed and LOVE for food. mine eats what i do - minus the spices. i want him happy.
|
My dogs eat only Eukanuba.
My sister just passed her board exams and is now a licensed Veternarian. My dogs eat Eukanuba because she said to :thumbsup |
Authority from PetsMart. No Fillers and No BiProducts. All good stuff to make for a healthy dog. I have been feeding my akita that since i got her at 2 months. She is strong healthy and fucking huge.
|
Scinece Diet is expensive but the BEST. It's the food that vets feed their own pets. Cute pup! Watch out for sore hips and back with the dachshund (wiener dog) mix. They can have lots of back and hip problems because of their super long bodies. Might want to carry the cutie up the stairs to spare his hahahaha the strain.:)
|
Any premium brand food should be fine. Iams, Science Diet, Eukanuba should all be ok. Just don't switch from brand to brand.
|
I've always fed my dog Iams
|
My father has one of them, feed him with any food that the first ingredient is not corn, the first ingredient most be chiken or beef. You won't miss. (Take some food for puppies):Graucho
|
Hills.
|
Oh, and btw. When your gonna buy the food, mix it with the food he used to eat. Then you wont have problems with his shit:Graucho
|
Get something without beef in it.. Get something with a decent pallate of foods... such as lamb, turkey, chicken, fish. Alot of dogs have beef alergies that cause them to act aggressive.. Cut out the cow hooves, and ears.. they have dyes, and also the hooves can have nails or rocks in them that can screw up a dogs teeth...
Stay away from dog food that has too much filler grain / wheat / corn fillers, it's ok to have in it, but not as a top main ingredient... If you're really serious about your dogs health go to a organic pet food store, pay the extra cost, it will help your dog alot.. We feed our dog Canidae Dog Food My wife is a veterinary technician and has tried alot of different types of food and has had alot of reccomendations from her co workers..... Canidae comes pretty highly reccommended |

i've fed my dog this stuff and loved it. his skin is dry so im switching over to this salmon kind because it has more oil in it. |
Whatever's on sale.
Kidding - KIDDING! (Mostly.) According to our Husky, pigeon's at the top of the menu. My cat is #2 on the list. But in all seriousness, most of the stuff you'll find at the grocery store contains generally the same ingredients. If you want to get serious about pet nutrition, you'll most likely want to buy one of the premium brands mentioned above. My best advice is ask your vet for a specific recommendation based on your animal's age, weight, activity level and general health. Human food really is not a good idea. Yeah, they love it - but then, little kids love hahahahahahas. Doesn't mean you let them eat all they want and to the exclusion of everything else. |
Science Diet is the best I think , they got lots of vitamins.
|
Good food is a little higher priced but will ultimately save you money in vet bills.
(and, more importantly, give your dog a longer healtheir happier life!) I suggest Nutro Natural Choice http://www.nutroproducts.com/naturalchoicedog.asp widely available at pet store chains (usually not in supermarkets) as others have said, read the labels. the first ingredients should be meat, then rice; not cornmeal. For meats, "meal" is ok; meal is the meat with the fat and water removed. But "by-products" are bad. By-products are intestines, heads, feet, and worse. also: certain types of chocolate are toxic for dogs. some are more sensitive than others. but for safety, keep it away from them. it may kill them in even moderate amounts. more info |
Royal Canin or Pedigree
|
I was a veterinary assistant in high school. At the clinic we always fed eukanuba to the animals. It works wonders. Good luck with your new pup, hes a cutie:)

Maybe it's not horrible, compared to grocery store brands.. but it's not best. Eukanuba contains a lot of cornmeal. It's cheap filler crap that made my dog itchy and his skin/fur smell like tortilla chips. Science Diet contains some corn meal (but not as much as Eukanuba). What do you think your health would be like if the bulk of your diet consisted of Cheetos? |
iams / eukanaba for small dogs
Pedigree for the big boys:thumbsup |
Stay away from mainstream branded pet food. It's utter crap and way too expensive.
We always buy a brand called "Olivers" - it's Canadian and the dogs love it! Plus, in tests, it turned out to be far more nutritious and healthy than any of the other topbrands, that cost maybe 40% more. |
i have 2 minpins. there dad was a rare color variety (slate blue/gray) that carried a prevalence to skin problems. some of them were passed on to my little girls (namely some allergies). anyways, i feed them a holistic food called- Solid Gold Holistic http://www.waggintails.com/programs/solidgold.htm
the food is great, not to mention they love it. it's made up of fish and grains and that is it. i also supplement their diets with a lot of other fresh items that i eat myself. |
Pedigree
|
Eukanuba it's OK, anyway,
My father have a lot of cats ane they use to eat the same dog food as well.. You could also take som pieces of beef and cook it with rice and carrots.. it sounds good even for dog owners :thumbsup samuel |
My vet has always pushed 'Science Diet' on me - it's expensive and i hate the smell. So I don't use it much. I see i have two cases downstairs, dunno how long they've been there.
She's been eating Top Choice - those burger looking things for years - my vet says all these products are the equivalent of feeding the dog McDonald's. I'm with Sleazy, yesterday I looked on the counter and there was 1 KrispyKreme glazed donut left in the box, I was just about to eat it and saw the dog out of the corner of my eye - she's 14, her hips are bad, she has 1 maybe 2 years left on this earth - I gave her the whole donut. |
My sister used to work for a vet, and has done a LOT of research on nurtrition... Everyone has their opinion, but she found a brand called Solid Gold and swears by it. We have always had English Mastiffs, and they are prone to health problems, but the ones we started on Solid Gold early in life are doing VERY well and outliving the normal life span...
http://www.solidgoldhealth.com/ It's tough to find, but you can order it online. And it ain't cheap... I used to go to this huge feed store in Pennsylvania where they had every brand of food you could think of except for Solid Gold. I had been a long time customer, so when I asked her why the lady pulled me aside and said "if I start selling Solid Gold, Science Diet and Eukenuba told me they would not ship me any more product, and those are my biggest sellers..." She went on to say that Solid Gold was much better than any of the major brands and told me I could get it from a small store in town. Our dogs have been on Solid Gold ever since... |
we use a Lamb and rice mix, good for their coat, as well as for nutrition:2 cents:
|
my puppy smoch can't handle dog food although he heas Friskies ... so I have to cock for him
|
Iams dry, a can of Alpo Beef every other day and a boiled or baked potato once a week (with a little butter to get him to eat it... they usually will go without the butter once they are used to the potatoes) The starch really makes his coat shiny. :)

I get natural food for her. Raw meats mixed with veggies. You can prepare it yourself, I buy it at a holistic pet store. If she changes and decideds she is not liking it for whatever reason, I will feed her Medi-Cal (recommended by the vet) or Science Diet is what I used to feed my cats.
|
I use NutroMax for my dogs. They are 8 and 11 and have been on it the 7 years I've owned them. They are in AWESOME health and no one can believe they are as old as they are, lol! I get the one for overweight and less active dogs. :)
