boxing used to be huge, there were three major sports in America for the first half of the last century - boxing, baseball and horse racing. Football, basketball, hockey, soccer, tennis, golf were nothing. Blacks were shut out of baseball until Jackie Robinson so the best black athletes wanted to be boxers. As football and basketball grew that's where the really talent black kids went. And now you are left with a pathetic heavyweight division. When boxing was big, other lower class ethnic groups, white skinned, wanted to be boxers - Italians, Polacks, Jews, - as those ethnic groups prospered in America their kids lost interest in boxing. Boxing is the one sport that only attracts the underclass - u have to grow up on some mean streets to want to be a boxer.

Too bad, boxing is a great sport but it appears to done. For most casual sports fans boxing is the heavyweight division.
