It looks weird because it's shedding it's skin, so there are actually "two" of it there...

And it looks weird because of how it's being held up in front of that guy's leg... it's much smaller than the photo leads you to believe...

but scary just the same... ew!

Camel spiders are one of the fastest running arthropods. Although they have four pairs of legs, they run using only three pairs. The first pair of legs or pedipalpi are held up in front of them and used in a similar manner to the antennae of insects. They have very long, silky setae and are constantly moving in order to locate and pick-up prey. Despite their fearsome appearance and their strong bite, solifugids are unlikely to harm humans. In the past they were considered venomous and extremely dangerous but it is now thought that the only risk of injury resulting from them is caused by shock or infection following a bite. There is no evidence of venom in any part of their hahahaha.

Camel spiders are nocturnal predators of other arthropods including scorpions and are voracious feeders. Some species kill and feed on lizards and it is speculated that others kill mice and birds. They rely solely on their speed and stealth to catch their prey. In desert areas they are often attracted to lights at night in search of food and their appearance can cause alarm if they enter tents. It is rare to see them during the winter months and they are thought to hide or hibernate during cold periods.

I was over in the desert in Saudi Arabia for 6 mths and saw those things all over the place. The myth is that they climb onto your face and inject you with a toxin that numbs a soft part of your face such as your ear or nose and then proceed to chew said hahahaha part off while you sleep.
Cool story to tell the newbies that rotate in, but actually a load of BS.
They are mean as fuck though and love to chase you around. I had a couple chase me up a ladder one day. Got to the top and started dropping shit on them. Motherfuckers are touch. We caught one once and dipped it in Liquid Oxygen. Crawled around for a few seconds and broke open and took a while to die. We had an aquarium that we would drop a camel spider and scorpion into pretty much every day (never took us long to find them). Camel spider won most of the time.
If you look closely at the pic it is actually 2 camel spiders hanging together and the pic is a closeup (look at the hand to the right). Each of those is probably only 3 inches long, about the same size as a tarantula.

What's sad is that the spiders and scorpions in Iraq would scare me more than the guys with guns.

My friend that was in Iraq was telling me stories about those nasty things and how hard they are to kill. He also said they are very intelligent. I guess they got one in this bonfire and it came out on fire still alive coming after soldiers. Fucking crazy.
