Who knows what "gook" means
 

I am not calling anyone a gook or anything like that, so before you start flaming this post keep this in mind, I am simply asking who is famailar with the word. Thanks.

It's racial slur for an asian.

Yeah, I know what it means, I was wondering if it was just a word that Americans were famailar with, or if it was a universally known word. Please answer just yes or no. Thanks. :)

go to club and look for some Vietnamese boys... go over to them and say "hey gook, what's happening".... Once you get out of the hospital (if you're lucky) come back here and tell us what they did to you....

we call asians 'gooks' because we assume they are not humans due to their robotic structures. they do not have bones and blood but a slimy green substance we refer to as 'gook'. thus, an explanation to your quagmire

Being of Asian descent, I know what it means.

The term originated in the Korean War. In Korean dialect, a white person is called a MeeGook and a Korean person refers to himself as a Hangook. If you look on Korean-made cars you'll see that they have Hangook (they spell it Hankook) tires which means "Korean".

During the war, Americans shortened the name to just Gook. It was easier to say than Hangook so it stuck. During the Vietnam War, they adopted the term to mean any Asian person. They called the enemy gooks because of what their fathers had taught them about the Korean War.

I think it became a derogatory comment after Hollywood abused the term in any one of their 1000 Vietnam War movies. Ever since then, the slang term for Asians became gooks. :mad:

The version I heard from a Korean Linguist was this:

When the US Marines landed in Korea, they were met by the South Koreans, who were chanting what sounded like Me Gook! Our good ole Marines automatically thought, Me Gook = What Koreans call themselves, and the title stuck, to include the whole asian race. Stupidity at it's finest.

Vietnamese are about 5 foot tall. Unless they've got a 10 foot knife on themselves I doubt you have much to worry about it.

Anthony, that could very much be true. My mother is Korean and my father is German so I got the best of both histories. The explanation I offered is what I heard through my Korean side of the family. Of course, as we all know, stories change when passed through different cultures.

Although I'm half Korean, the word gook doesn't really offend me at all. But if you call me a Kraute or Jerry...I'm going to whoop someone's ass! :mad:
