The worst thing that can happen to a webmaster happened to me!

Yesterday my PC was attacked by some kind of virus, hard drive C:\ was destroyed and guess what I was to lazy to do a back up of my work. I have 3 hard drives and 2 weeks ago I wanted to back up everything I have worked with since 1999 by copy to those other 2 hard drives, but I was to lazy and thought I would do that later...
Now those other 2 hard drives are ok and I lost the most important c: ... 100's of important bookmarks, 1000' of my private pictures that I had only on my PC, 10000's of adult pics and movie clips that I own, and all of my old pages/sites...my history.
2 new sites that I have been working with for 2 weeks "gone"
Together over 15 sites that is not online right now are gone!
And not to mention about lost MP3's that I collected for 5 years.
All that I can do now is just to download those material that I have right now online, but its not much compering what I had on my PC.

All I know is that I have installed Messenger Plus the day before and uninstalled it right after installation because its full with spyware. So I don't know if that have something to do with...

So all of you who is to lazy to make some kind of backup just do it today, before its to late...
I would give at least $5k to go back in time 2 days, so if you work on some kind of time machine let me know :winkwink:

by the way...I forgot to mention 100's of emails with usernames and passwords from sponsors and other important e-mails also gone (outlook)

TheMob 04-07-2004 06:39 AM

damn sorry to hear that..

DR_PHIL 04-07-2004 06:41 AM

thats sad man..its happened to me before and I backup my shit daily now

EddiePulp 04-07-2004 06:43 AM

sorry to hear...sucks to be u...
its worth investing in NAV ... and updating weekly.

I got a Linux machine on my network... does regular tar backups of both of my drives twice a week... nothing on my PC is that.. important.. but I have had to recall a backup on two occasions, saved me a lot of shit.. installing everything.. Norton Ghost is the shit

ldinternet 04-07-2004 06:45 AM

I think the worst thing for an adult webmaster would be being raided by the FBI for some shit or another.

Closely followed by having your penis slammed in a car door. :(

Spunky 04-07-2004 06:47 AM

Always make it a point to update your antivirus and NEVER open attachments. That sucks though

cool1 04-07-2004 06:49 AM

BUmmers man
is it not possible to use one of those recovery programs to get the stuff back?

DarkJedi 04-07-2004 06:49 AM

mrgica, it is possible to restore almost any data.
talk to some professional, they can restore data after HD's were formated.

LOL, that's what I was expecting when I opened this thread:)

Hey, if you haven't tried to format the drive yet try taking it out and moving the pin jumper to slave and plugging the IDE cable from a CD ROM into it and see if you can view the files from there. I have been able to retrieve things from an apparently dead hard drive that way. If it works, copy the files you want to try to save to a folder and virus scan them all before trying to use them.

DarkJedi 04-07-2004 06:51 AM

Also in future, get a RW-CD and copy all your text files with usernames/passwords and your email folders.

Takes 5 minnutes but incase something like this happens again - you will have a backup.

Jamdin 04-07-2004 06:53 AM

Don't just back up your files but also print out the important emails and file them physically.

I was talking with some company who is in repairing Pc's they say that my hard drive is not formatted but everything is destroyed, and its impossible to get some files out.
Maybe I shod try with some other company...

Thanks I will try that right now...hope it works...

put two 100 gigs harddrives in your pc...work at one and every day copy your shit to the other through scheduler. A lesson learned the hardway.

Nydahl 04-07-2004 07:03 AM

fuck bro - take a few days off and then go to work again.Shit happen time after time
wish you luck:glugglug

making a daily copy of your files isnt the best solution. You need some sort of archiving so you can go back a few days or weeks if needed.

You also dont not want your backups on the same physical machine as the one your backing up.. what if you get a virus? or a hacker? both copies would then be gone.

jhauser 04-07-2004 07:14 AM

I am very sorry to hear that. People who create viruses deserve a long and painful death.

brand0n 04-07-2004 07:17 AM

thanks
doing a back up right now.

No man it's not working, OS can't read/open that HD.
But thanks anyway.

I know now, but I have been using PC for years and nothing like this ever happened, thats why it was no worry...

myjah 04-07-2004 07:26 AM

really sorry to hear that - I've lost very important personal photos the same way. The good thing about this is that it only has to happen once for you to learn your lesson and always backup!

KRL 04-07-2004 07:32 AM

A data recovery service can retrieve your data. Its expensive but most people who think their hard drive is a goner are surprised by the results.

I had a hard drive that I thought was kaput and I bought some recovery software and ended up only losing under 5% of the data on the drive and fully recovered the rest.

I keep 2 external hard drives for backup and a backup of the backup. I also keep printed out copies of important contracts and files like that in multiple locations at home and at the office.

I keep my e-mail files backed up, besides on the 2 external hard drives on another internal hard drive at a pc at home and another at the office so I have 4 backups for my e-mails now on drives and then one goes on a CD-R for a 5th backup thats in a fireproof safe.

I used to be more lax like you, but all it takes it one event and you realize how important it is to become a paranoid backuper of everything important.

mrgica 04-07-2004 07:47 AM

I just talked with some company here in sweden, who seams to be expert in data recovery, after a couple of questions they told me that they will recover at least 95% of my data guarantied.
They can also recover data from formatted HD's
I can't believe this! It's amazing. :thumbsup
Hope it works out...

Thats some backup, It almost gives me a feeling that I deserve what happened to me. Well I guess I will do the same from now.

BVF 04-07-2004 07:58 AM

and if you're too lazy to do that, at LEAST upload everything that you would need to your server and MAKE SURE that your bill is paid every month!

This whole house could burn down right now and all of my files would still be able to be found.

chupachups 04-07-2004 08:13 AM

Sorry to hear that Gica..:/
I use handybackup to backup (uploading them on ftp and to a 2nd com) all my important files daily..

Perhaps you should talk to Ibas if those files were really important?
