Don't hang out with anyone that smokes............

it's too hard to resist when everyone around you is doing it...

jimmyf 04-05-2004 11:37 AM

good luck.. I'm thinking about quiting.

Manowar 04-05-2004 11:38 AM

Willpower, and avoiding people who will be smoking for a while would be a good idea

CDSmith 04-05-2004 11:40 AM

Never bring a flame near the tip of a cigarette and you'll be fine.

Trixie Racer 04-05-2004 11:40 AM

Just quit. When I quit I was really bitchy for about two weeks. Real friends understand. I would still smoke when I drank alcohol but broke myself of that by smoking an 8 month old pack of stale smokes while drunk once. I've NEVER craved a cigarette since then.

Avoid smokers and dont watch smokers on the TV!:)

Giorgio_Xo 04-05-2004 11:42 AM

Look at autopsy photos of people that died of smoking related illnesses. Worked for me.

That really, really blows ..

I quit smoking when my wife conceived our first daughter. That was my 3rd and final attempt... proving that it just takes will power. If you don't REALLY want to quit you're not going to quit. You have to really want it .. and then plan it .. and plan it some more .. and stick to it.

Pick a date .. the night before throw away all your cigarettes. You might want to cut back a little first too .. but that may or may not really make a difference. Decide what you're gonna do when you crave. Find a substitution. Decide what you'll do if it actually comes down to the point where you're breaking and about to light one up .. call a friend .. go walk around a no-smoking public building .. something.

I found that walking or excersising helped .. as well as watching long movies or reading books.. something to take your mind off of it.

i did the patch for 2 weeks then stopped it and haven't smoked since (3 years now) every so often you get the craving for a few mins but it goes away pretty quickly.

Coke/Pepsi was much more difficult to stop then cigs.

Stop smoking through hyptnosis. It actually works if you want it too.... and, no cravings.

DavePlays 04-05-2004 12:34 PM

I tried those patches.....

They didn't work for me.

I couldn't keep them lit.......:Graucho

cypocrypt 04-05-2004 12:35 PM

is easy...specially after finding out you have lung cancer...worked for me

I have been looking into hyptnosis myself, so it worked for you?

Did you do an online thing?

:)

rml_bob 04-05-2004 01:04 PM

Join the club. I am trying that myself as well. I have been thinking about some time. Finally made up my mind this weekend. One day and a half. I am doing ok myself so far. We will see.

Sami 04-05-2004 01:06 PM

I tried the gum and it worked.

But later I decided to smoke again : )

But I hear cold turkey is the best way to go.

good luck

Poo-Chee 04-05-2004 01:08 PM

dugtape yourself onto your bed till you don't want to smoke anymore...

TheJimmy 04-05-2004 01:10 PM

ps, patches did help a lil...used them for 3 days...

took up a bit of a gum chewing habit temporarily....and learned to drink a lot more 'non caffinated' tea so as not to anger the Kundis (I used to heavily associate coffee & cigs)

Thong Sniper 04-05-2004 01:13 PM

I quit 6 months ago after smoking for 7 years.

my advice is this. don't lie to yourself, if you're ready to quit, quit. if you're not ready to quit, don't even bother.

if you take the steps to quit, realize that there may be moments of weakness and allow yourself to have these moments. if you don't you will mentally feel that you failed and you may end up smoking again.

keep in mind that smoking offers you nothing in return. it may make you feel more relaxed and less edgy and more calm, but really craving nicotine is what brings on the cause for needing to be more calm.

and another thing that i did was set an activity goal for a few months in advance. i wanted to play in a flag football league but couldnt as an active smoker. so that desire to play the game helped aid me in quitting. and it paid off.

if you don't succeed this time around. dont worry. its completely possible to give up smoking.

Scott McD 04-05-2004 01:15 PM

I can smoke if i want. Stop if i want.

I can go weeks and weeks without smoking, then if i go to a club and feel like it i do, but i can wake up the next day and not even think about smoking again.

Which is good... :)

I agree ! :2 cents:

insanesurfer 04-05-2004 01:22 PM

Don't start! But seeing how that is too late. You have to have the willpower to stop if you give in and have one don't toss everything you have done out the door. Sooner or later you will find that you are giving in less and less.

kimzar 04-05-2004 01:34 PM

its all willpower

arial 04-05-2004 01:46 PM

Go to your local hospital and look at all the people suffering from lung cancer and emphysema.

in the end, virtually all smokers will get COPD - a mixture between emphysema and chronic bronchitis

I believe it's the hardess thing to do seeing you live on your puter
its been a year for me on this month April/24th my sons 6th birthday. you should qiut cold turkey as I did.. stop the coffee or tea while your quiting.. if you feel you need to drink something hot
drink hot chocolate or something decaffed, if you don't make it after the first attempt thats okay, keep trying the attempts you make will get longer with time. it took me 4 times to quit completely! and yes I feel more energetic have more money to by beer with..YAHHHH... 'just joking' also you should avoid clubs that are full of smokers? I hads a buddy visit me flew into town and we have smoking areas enclosed for puffers but I sat there most of the night but the next day I woke up with a terrible sore throat from breathing in that second hand smoke!

I believe it's pretty stupid to have smoked that long a period in my life and I won't ever smoke again.. the smart ones either don't start or quit!.. *don't die a statistic*

My father for witch we never saw eye-to-eye he died from lung cancer at a young 63 yrs old.. he smoke a pipe.. I looked at this as a sign/guide/ for me to do the right things in life and look hard at the choices ahead of me?

and don't think that dope/pot/ is the answer either by thinking it won't give you cancer it will. L8ter..:glugglug

Furious_Male 04-05-2004 02:19 PM

Take a long walk through a cancer ward. Then apply several of the standard methods.. repeat..

zentz 04-05-2004 02:54 PM
