I shipped my cairn terrier from LA to Alaska (I was giving him away to a new family, and he had to go to the absolute best one; ergo, Alaska.)

The actual adventure involved a mechanic's strike, wrong terminals, puppy tranquilizers, and an awful lot of dogshit in my car. The actual flight was fine for Burrford.

When I asked him how the turbolence was, he answered: "Ruff."

I recently brought 2 Rottweilers from Costa Rica.

They had to be flown cargo because of their size. I was on the plane aswell.

American Airlines is what I used. They have policies regarding safe transport of animals that include no travelling if the temperature at the tarmac is above or below a certain range.

They also had a vet at the Houston Hub on staff.

My expierence was good overall. Very expensive, but good.

He wasn't shipped, but I was permitted to carry my cat on the plane under a seat. He was not amused...

If it's a long distance, you probably don't have a choice.

I was on a one hour flight last Thursday. An animal was in the cargo and could be heard whimpering for at least 15 min while people boarded.

But once the plane got going, the engines drowned him out

there are companies that specialize in this...when i moved cross-country i hired one, they made the reservation to ship the cat as cargo, picked the cat up at my vet, took care of all the shots and paperwork, and just told me where and when to pick him up. the cat was fine, and i didn't have to worry about a thing (even though i did lol) except for the bill...about $700...it was definitely worth it.

I never bring my pet on the plane with me,
but I guess it can be allowed in some airlines.

I took my dog from costa rica to Amsterdam, just make sure all papers and injections are done well and the pet has an passport .
And inform the guys on the airport in time, and be there in time :))

In some countries the pet needs to be in custody/quarantine (sorry if i misspelled that) for a certain period, sort our everything well, sometime quarantine can cost a lot .

Good luck :)

it's done by my local shelter on a weekly basis. i suggest you wait with at the airport until the pet is boarded and make sure someone is waiting when the plane lands. also don't fly in extreme hot weather. tape all his contact and vital information on his carrier along with a photo of him. freeze some water in a bowl for a longer flight so he will have water late in the flight. poor guys. if it is a very long flight and the dog needs to be fed , watered or walked tape all those things to his carrier in ziploc bags including a leash or lead.
