WTF? Webmasters and Modern Psychiatry

I've seen/ quite a few posts here regarding anxiety disorders/bipolar conditions/depression. Many of these threads share the same common theme:

Since our moods are regulated by our chemistry, we really aren't in control.

While I sympathize with my fellow webmasters with the conditions listed above, I do have a beef with 'modern' views on mental conditions. Here's my commentary on that:

The conventional wisdom: Since our moods are regulated by our chemistry, we really aren't in control.

And there lies the problem of modern reality. Our moods no longer reflect inner conflict, personal and social situations, or are affected by our thoughts, but rather all of the above mentioned are simply outward observable effects of our flawed chemistry that can be treated in order that we might remain productive and hard working citizens. All other possible interpretationsare either the signs of schizophrenia or dangerous egotism.

At what point did man become simply a pile of chemicals with no will of his own, to be regulated through the application of a modern "science" that has been determined through trial and error with results confirmed only by companies and doctors that are paid to find positive results for their sponsors products. Alternatively we are labeled to be the result of an imbalance triggered by unsatisfactory childhoods, labeled dangerous and treated with fear of punishment for the crimes that our neighbors and peers imagine that we might commit due to our faulty gaeneology and improper upbringing. Woe to the person who recognises abilities in themselves that are not fitting with their assigned lot in life, for their egotism will result only in attempts to upset the order and displace some deserving person from their rightful place. Those who are happy in spite of ill fortune, or those who have chosen a life that is "beneath their station", are taught to believe that it is not "real happiness" but instead they are "in denial".

For years now persons who are unhappy with their lot in life have been told that they are depressed and fed an increasingly complicated regimen of pills. But the pills have failed to do much more than make some complacent and/or unfeeling, our lives are not more peacable, and the very medications that are intended to make us "normal" are being found to lead some to commit suicide or acts of violence.

Not to worry, we now have Happiness Training. Specialized doctors of psychiatry who will lead us by the hand to learn how to be happy, in spite of the fact that the proffession is dominated by the most depressed and suicidal proffessionals that our colleges are capable of producing.

They've fucked with our heads and fucked them up, so to fix us up right and to restore the balance they want to fuck with our heads a little more. Don't go to a friend for advice, he's not licensed! Don't sit by a stream and listen to the water, that's not a recognised therapy! Don't sit and pray, as belief in the divine is simply a crutch for the weak minded! And most of all don't listen to your own conscience, as that would imply that you've lost touch with reality, as only crazy people can hold a dialogue with a part of their own mind.

Stop trying to treat yourself and get out that checkbook. Otherwise you might find yourself dangerously close to being institutionalized. I'm real sure that these "professionals" can help us find happiness, and the "programming" model is a perfect way to consider it because after all, we are nothing more than chemical computation machines, and imperfect ones at that.

Will it ever reach a point that there will be pills to regulate personal 'imperfections' other than diagnosed mental illnesses?
