Dont own one, but I agree. Peregrine falcons OWN pigeon ass. Pigeons are nothing but rats with wings anyway.

I have a racing pigeon. Wik has been attacked by hawks 3 times.
twice by a cooper hawk and once by a peregrine.

he is still flying strong, and pigeons can out fly/manuever all hawks if they are in peak physical condition.

The peregrine has the fastest diving speed, which is how they surprise groups of pigeons flying. But if they don't get them with the first shanghai attack, it is likely they will have to draw back and try again later. The racing pigeon has the second fastest flying speed of all birds. They can also fly for up to 16 hours beating their wings constantly, no other bird can do that.

If you have never owned a pigeon or are unskooled in their history with human beings, it is easy to think they are rats with wings.

Nope. But I don't agree with the USDA standards for meat production so I only eat wild game.

Check with your local Fish and Game department about the Falconers License prerequisites. Some states, like Texas (when I applied in mid 80s) took one year of demonstratable knowledge and frequent testing. I'm sure that standards have become more strict with today's regulations and public whining.

Once your application is approved, you can acquire a non-endangered bird. Your state Fish and Game department can provide you with a list of verified breeders and even a list of tips for capturing a wild bird (not recommended for beginners). Endangered birds will require far more scrutiny before you will even be considered. You would also have to demonstrate a valid purpose for possessing an endangered bird -- a hobby does not count.

Regardless, a falconers permit/license is high maintenance, not to mention the proper care for the bird. Exercise and diet is key for the bird to remain healthy. You will be constantly monitored by the Fish and Game department. Any discrepancy will cost you your license.

No, but I've read the "My Side of the Mountain" series of books by Jean George. They made me want one. The falcon is the book is named Frightful. I want a Frightful so I can go live in the woods and have her hunt rabbits for my dinner. :)
