When you start seeing it everywhere is a good sign you do too much of it.

The cannabis growth cycle has two stages.. vegetative and flowering. The flowers of the female plant are what produce the THC .. you're right that the leaves are useless .. but you can not tell the difference between hemp and marijuana and it's vegetative state.. just like you can not tell the difference between the male and female plant until flowering.
