Gateway to close 188 all of their stores next week

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Gateway Inc. (GTW.N: Quote, Profile, Research) on Thursday said it would close its 188 stores and eliminate about 2,500 retail positions, the biggest move the personal computer and consumer electronics maker has made since it bought eMachines Inc. last month.
Poway, California-based Gateway said it was also pursuing wider retail distribution of its PCs, digital cameras, flat-panel TVs and other products in the United States and abroad. The company, which had embarked on remodeling the stores before buying eMachines, was not more specific.

Gateway, which is also moving its headquarters north to Orange County, California, completed its acquisition of eMachines last month. Buying the profitable rival doubled Gateway's market share in the United States to about 7 percent, and it forecast it will return to sustained profitability in 2005 as a result of the acquisition.

Gateway's stores, which will be closed on April 9, have long been criticized by analysts and investors as an expensive drag on cash flow because of lease costs and the difficulty of managing inventories.

Also, with eMachines, Gateway doesn't necessarily need the added distribution channel the stores gave the company. In addition to selling Gateway's wares over the phone and via the Internet, eMachines PCs are sold at major retailers such as Best Buy Co.

Never stepped a foot in one of their stores. The computers are decent. Their cheap flat screen tvs are what got my attention recently.

doing the dell thing... it was only a matter of time.

they should have bought/rented space in somewhere like wal-marts. Maybe hire a few people..eliminate all the other bs needed for a standalone.

Bought my first Gateway in 95... and another in 99... I'd never touch them with a 10 foot pole again.

The gateway boxes people've asked me to fix have been a bit of an ass, the ones I've seen, a few had components crammed into a case that wasn't really big enough...

Those stupid ass stores epitomized retailing gone wrong. The key to making money in retail is using every sqare inch you can to sell your goods.

You walk into gateway and they have all this cavernous space and one pc for sale every 10 feet at best.

The cow thing is stupid as fuck too.

I remember walking into a store and walking right out thinking oh my god they must have a complete idiot running their retail division.

SetTheWorldonFire 04-01-2004 05:21 PM

they can't keep up with best buy, circuit city, and other big name stores.

I completely agree, I only wonder why it took as long as it did for this concept to die.
