FCC Starts Censoring The Word "JESUS"

Last night the FCC started censoring the word JESUS.

During a david letterman show last night with janet jackson the FCC intervened and censored out janet jackson saying the word "jesus".

Seriously wtf is going on..

Hell... sad stuff!!

It's getting more like an adapted version of communism each day... just more to the Nazi side..

Where the fuck does it say the FCC censored the word "Jesus?" CBS censores decided to bleep it on their own. I like it when people make up facts to sensationalize their posts.

To clarify, the word "Jesus" was said in a swearing context - as in "Jesus Christ!" and not said in a religious way. Plus, it was CBS and Jackson, so everyone was on egg shells. I agree it was silly, but you have to get the facts and context straight.

TheFrog 03-30-2004 03:33 PM

If using jesus as an exclamation is banned, how can we tell about the context of its use at all times.

I think a full on-air ban of the term 'jesus' is in order, to preserve the airwaves for our children.

Your right it doesnt say if it was the cbs censors or the fcc. And im sure it was the cbs censors first ( on advice from the fcc to censor anything remotely shady )

And your right about the context she used it in, but that doesn't matter much either..

I dont think we should be censoring "jesus" used in any context .. I have heard the same statement by the local news at 6 am.... " i was a little suprised "

The thread is a bit sensationalized but I hardly think what she said was worth censoring. I don't give a fuck who did it. Its all just snowballing now.

The FCC doesn't censor anyone directly, they fine and revoke licenses for violations. It's up to the individual networks to "self-police" with their own batch of censors. CBS, being one of the old big networks that still broadcasts through the airwaves, is subject to a higher level of scrutiny than other channels. CBS was probably just airing on the side of caution because of recent events. I'm not saying it wasn't a silly decision, but rather explaining their rationale.

So, TV stations are in a state of paranoļa because of all the crap the FCC is trying to censor and the huge fines, yet you blame CBS? If they where outraged by a boob, there's a good chance they'd be outraged by anything that may sound out of place.

Well said. I did jump the gun in putting the blame all on the FCC. But its the pressure from the FCC that makes the CBS censors do this..

Just to re-state the fcc did not make this decision they merely pressured cbs to make this decision...

Sorry about that confusion..

Either way i dont think the cbs should be censoring the word jesus on a late night tv show yet run the several other morning shows with the same comments made..

At first this comment seemed out there for this board, but now that I think about it, if we ban the word jesus from all usage on the air it will kill shows like the 700 club, and these ministry shows..I say rock on with this Idea, put those morons out of business.

TV stations aren't in a state of paranoia - just look at CBS' airing of Courtney Love a few weeks back. The FCC hasn't implemented any new rules either. They are simply responding to massive complaints that certain media outlets have gone too far for too long. The Super Bowl incident was an abberation which forced the FCC's hand. It wasn't just about a "boob," but rather an ambush on the most watched program of the year on the most family-safe network during dinner time broadcasted over the airwaves (not just cable). They had to react. The whole thing has to be put in context. The sky isn't falling. Every now and then the FCC has to respond to the demands of the public at large - no matter how silly we at GFY feel about it. The networks put on notice are simply playing it extra safe right now. Things like this are necessary for change to slowly happen.

You know if they banned the word Jesus they'd say Jeebus.

They censored the word Jesus so they probably are in a state of paranoia.
The FCC is responding to the demands of a small group of religious nuts and sexually frustrated people.
The abberation is those cheerleaders who act like idiots and portray women as nothing more than dumb babes cheering for there men. Yet you don't see me whining and complaining trying to stop such a practice. If the world had to live according to my morals, it wouldn't be fun.

biglou 03-30-2004 04:06 PM

There's another way of looking at this... with all the shit the FCC is pulling in their lasted power play, they may just be digging their own grave. They seem to be creating a controversy despite public lack of opinion on the matter.

The world is laughing at us... it was just a boob.
