One week since my LASIK eye surgery

Went for my one week visit. My vision is fairly close to 20/20 but not quite there yet. The doctor said it should keep improving as my eyes heal and hopefully I'll get there.

I definitely don't need contacts or glasses though. The only thing that scared me is that I have to go back again next week because he noticed something about the healing of the flap they cut that he says shouldn't be a problem but he wants to check next week just in case.

Then if all goes well, I'll have checkups every 3 months for the rest of this year, then just go back to annual eye exams after that.

Keep us informed

This is my next trip to the Dr :)

EDIT: I still cant forget that episode in the Simpsons where his eyes crust over........

I've been out of my gas permeable contacts for almost 7 weeks now. Went for my screening appt about 3 weeks ago. I decided to wait until this week to check on any further changes in my vision. I go tomorrow to check on that. If there's been minor or no change at all in the past 3 weeks, then I'm scheduled for Lasik this Friday.

The place I'm going includes the use of the Visx StarS4 Excimer Laser in their rate. I'll pay extra for the new Visx Customvue wavefront corrective laser.

Supposedly, I won't need glasses until I'm older...like 45-50, and then just reading glasses. This surgery can't fix vision problems brought on by old age.

Hopefully that means I've got at least 20 years of great vision ahead of me.

Good luck with your surgery, PK. I went with the custom blah blah blah $5600 dent in your wallet surgery. I think I'm having buyers remorse though since the $3k surgery probably would have had the exact same results...heh. Oh well, can't argue with the results.

Mine will run about $3200. Probably the difference in parts of the country.

I'm 43.. but still not at the age for needing bifocals. The doc told me some people do mono vision.. have one eye done for near vision and one for far. That it might buy them 2 or 3 years on needing reading glasses, but it can be difficult for some people to get used to.

My doc is very well known in the industry and not just a Lasik doc. He's even patented several pieces of equipment and procedures related to eye surgery.

yep, I had my radial keratonomy done over 20 years ago, and now just need reading glasses, sometimes

Tanker 03-30-2004 01:11 AM

I had it done 3 years ago now

20/15 and still going I paid $1100 bucks all said and done best 1100 bucks I spent went from 20/400 to 20/15 in 10 minutes

$5 submissions 03-30-2004 01:13 AM

I had it done. One of the best investments I ever made. It takes about 6 months to completely heal and you no longer need to use artificial tears eye drops.

RichC 03-30-2004 01:16 AM

Good Luck PK!

I did it last October...don't even remember life with glasses anymore .... so worth it.

I remember you posting on Oprano about it. I've gone round and round about it for several years. Finally this past Feb I said "screw it.. I'm doing it". I had to hide my contact lens case. I don't know how many mornings the first few weeks I got up, headed to the bathroom and then reached for them to put them in. 26 years of old habit.

Microkeratome-related complications:
? "Buttonhole" flaps
? Free caps
? Irregular caps
? Incomplete flaps
? Thin flaps
? Small flaps
0.7% to 11.8% in published reports; but 2.2% or less in studies with larger patient populations

Excimer-laser-related complications:
? Central islands
? Decentered ablations
1.2% for myopia correction and 6.8% for combined hyperopia-astigmatism correction n early reports, but advances in laser technology and surgical technique have largely eliminated these problems

zzgundamnzz 03-30-2004 01:50 AM

Can anybody recommend a doctor in Southern CA. Thinking about getting this done too :)

Mr. Marks 03-30-2004 01:53 AM

Just keep it easy on those eyes.

Twatacom 03-30-2004 09:33 AM

anyone gotten LASIK in NY or on long island? looking for somewhere reputable to get it done this week.

Steve 03-30-2004 09:41 AM

Does it hurt? Can they knock you out? No way I can imagine anyone working n ny eye while I am not sedated. I'd never be able to use contact lenses - I've got a blink reflex or something like that.

Rictor,
Your vision does continue to improve for about a month while the eyes heal. Just make sure you use the drops all the time for a while, otherwise your eyes get sore, and can cause headaches. I had mine done last August, and they're still 20/15, no complications.

Jedimaster 03-30-2004 10:50 AM

I've been wearing contacts for almost 15 years.

The new ones don't bother me and I only change them 1x month.

That lasic scares the shit out of me

Edguy! 03-30-2004 10:51 AM

Don't forget, your eyes fall out at the 10 year mark...

axelcat 03-30-2004 10:51 AM

I hope it works out for you

Jesus...I should have flown out there and had it done. Could have spent the extra money on a nice vacation. Sigh.

The most painful part for me was the clamps that kept my eyes open...I could relax my face so it kept fighting the clamps and I got some bruises. Also, the pressure they put on your eye until your vision goes black is painful for a couple seconds.

You eyes are numbed with drops so you don't feel much. The laser is painless. All in all, it's 10 minutes of discomfort.

And yes, you have to be awake for it.

Screaming 03-30-2004 10:57 AM

keep us posted, i would really love to have that done... just dont want to pay all that money and it not help me ya know

Yah, mine came with a Lifetime guarantee. I hope I don't have to get it done again some day.

I talked to about 100 people locally that had it done...none of them had any problems. The only horror story I have heard is from a man that went blind...but they guy was 80 years old...not even sure why he had the surgery...it was probably for other reasons.

My only concern is post-operative flap problems. I'm going back for a checkup again next week to make sure they are healing right.

Is that transferable if you donate your eyes???
