I don't run unix for my desktop anymore, but my friends have been raving about gentoo. I needed to install a linux variant for a new fileserver, downloaded and burnt the gentoo live CD but my machine wouldn't boot it. After making coasters out of two blanks I found some old redhat9 disks and installed that. So, YMMV, but my friends who bothered to fuck with it say it's great. Good luck!

i work @ a colo and the redhat installs are to similar to M$...... they install all kinds of bloated sheit. gentoo is minimalistic and thats what im all about. |
except when it comes to food -- give me the appetizer sampler, a steak, salad, bread and some soup with a nice chocolate cake to end with and im fucking GOOD

As far as wysiwyg editors in linux, the only one I can think of is mozilla's composer. I think CuteHTML may have a linux port, but I couldn't guarantee it.

no, im afraid windows is just too good :(

if it's the primary OS on your PC, you're a true geek
if you're not running it as the OS on your primary server, you're a shmuck... |
I run it at work (slackware 9.1). At home I have windowsXP for my wife.....

Suse 9.0 Pro
WYSIWYG editor Mozilla Composer or you can try Coffee Cup softwares <a href="http://linux.tucows.com/preview/9114.html">Linux HTML Editor</a> |
Heres a hint... over 90% of surfers use IE on a Windows platform.
As a webmaster why the hell would you use anything else for website development? yes, I know you can make all your sites 100% compatible with every browser becasue you adhere to the HTML/XML/ECT. standards.... IN A MAGICAL DREAM LAND OF EGG NOG AND GUMDROPS!!!!!!! (I still have a Red Hat Box sitting next to me too) |
Yep.

Hi ..
We run Mandrake on some of our computers. Works pretty fine. Try Quanta as HTML editor. It's not Wysiwyg, but I thinks is the best editor on linux OS. |
I've run Gentoo in the past, its not really for the faint of heart..
Basically to achieve its 'minimalism' you actually build the base system up yourself using specific commands through their package management software. This means that you end up having to manually install every little thing you require (although, obviously dependency checking helps here). Last time I used it (1.4rc3?) the hardware configuration was all left up to the end user too, so it was basically a case of manually compiling the right kernel modules and configuring Xfree86. To be honest, if you value your time at all, you should probably just get a copy of Fedora and let it take care of all that stuff for you. |
