Photoshop masters, please help!

Alright, I'm not a photoshop master, I'm a fireworks user. If someone could tell me how to do this in fireworks, that would great, but I think this can only be done in photoshop.

How do you go from this:

to:

Step by step processing would be helpful!

Thanks in advance all.

It just looks like it was sharpened and maybe tweaked with hue/saturation and brightness. Not really a huge deal - am I missing something?

High Quality 03-29-2004 06:31 AM

I could be wrong but I think its more than that....

Merrioc 03-29-2004 06:34 AM

crtl shit L

its just auto levels

OzMan84 03-29-2004 06:35 AM

i think the 1st picture looks fine to me

It looks like the unsharp mask was used, but very strongly (about 200 %). The saturation and brightness was also increased. If you have any trouble ICQ me: 209356106

200% unsharp with a radius 1 0 threshold would not result in this.

The brightness was adjusted but also something else...

Anyone else have any ideas?

SubSonic 03-29-2004 06:49 AM

The edges were sharpened 2 times

For the brightness play a little with the gradationcurves. Dunno how its called in the english version of photoshop.

( in the menu go to picture -> settings -> and there it is the fifth point from the top)

Hope it helps. I have tried it myself and it looks pretty similar to the one you've posted.

I use many techniques on a single image. The first thing to do is see if the image is oversaturated (if it's real red in hue it needs help off the bat). I use a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer for that and drop the saturation way down.

Then I use auto contrast, auto levels & auto color and see if each makes a difference. If it doesn't (or it worsens the image) just hit Ctrl+Z to undo it.

After that I go up and bring brightness back to the image with brightness/contrast. Then I use Unsharp Mask to sharpen the image. After that you get into techniques to really make the image look airbrushed. It's a lot easier than you think...

The easiest way is to duplicate the image layer and hit the duplicated layer (top layer) with a light Gaussian Blur (1.5) then change the blend mode to soft light and lower the opacity until it looks good.

The bottom image in your example is oversharpened, in my opinion. Unsharp mask needs to be used "right" to have a pro-looking outcome. I use 50%, .8 and 3 levels. If it needs more, Ctrl+F :thumbsup

I used the above on all the cropped images on this page:

its been a while since i used fireworks, but using photoshop i achieved a similar result by just sharpening then adjusting the brightness/contrast like llabtaem said.... cant remember what functions fireworks has but you should be able to do the same in it as pshop?

I appreciate your help but there is no menu item called "picture" and I don't know what gradiationcurves are.

:( I use fireworks and photoshop is an entirely different interface to me..

No its not a simple brightness/contrast and sharpen. If you look close, it looks like her skin was smoothed or airbrushed. Its probably some filter that I don't know about.....

Platinumpimp 03-29-2004 07:05 AM

that pic has a brightness which is too high, oversaturated.

As for the skin effect, thats a simple stamp tool, or smooth effect.

How would the skin effect be achieved? Smooth effect?

ozmatt 03-29-2004 07:08 AM

ok, thought you just wanted to know about the colour and brightness. Try just using the blur tool (water drop on the toolbar) in photoshop to give the girls face a softer look, adjust the pressure etc

Alright, $10 by paypal to the 1st person who takes the original and duplicates the 2nd photo and posts the exact steps.

Post your resulting thumb..

ozmatt 03-29-2004 07:31 AM

1/ sharpened

2/ brightness/contrast until desired level achieved about +25, +15

3/ unshark mask 22%, radius 1

4/ blur tool, and smooth down the face..

thats about it... : | looks close enough to me :)

<img src="http://www.zayneecreations.com/projects/chick.jpg">

1. add hue/saturation layer...lower saturation to: -20.
2. Merge the original layer with the adjustment layer.
3. Image » Adjustments » brightness/contrast
Brightness: +15
Contrast: +20
4. Unsharp Mask: 50%, 0.8, 3 levels
5. Duplicate Layer
6. Gaussian Blur new layer 1.5
7. Blend Mode "Overlay" : 60% opacity
8. go back to the orginal layer and use unsharp mask with same settings as last time TWICE.

hey was just about to reply and tell you about the blur tool, but you have since edited your post? use the blur tool like a paintbrush and just "paint" the area you want to blur, and smooth out.

i am off to bed, so good luck with the image. I dont worry about the contest, just happy to help out :)

night
