Charcoal or Gas barbeque, Which do you prefer ?

I was a fanatic for a long time of Charcoal, even turned down a free gas one when they were still expensive. Then one day I went and bought a gas one. Still have a charcoal for the occasional burnt offering, but always use the gas year around :thumbsup

Harmon 03-27-2004 03:28 PM

Gas grills kick ass. Less work and not as messy. You do sacrifice some of that charcoal taste but convenience is the key. Just my opinion.

I do keep a small hibachi for my boat and camping trips :thumbsup

MrIzzz 03-27-2004 03:28 PM

dude....no way.....gas is for lazy people:1orglaugh

i always take the time to barbecue with charcoal, it makes the food taste so much better!!!!!!! theres a whole art to charcoal barbecuing, and it makes those summer cookouts so much better

if i wanna cook all year around i'll just use the stove.

I still wait for your bio Bro :winkwink:

Steak taste better on charcoal but Gas are more convenient and cleaner, you don,t need to empty the ashes from it, the stones last almost forever and if you go out of gas during a party you won,t mess all your clothes changing the tank beside adding charcoal...

Suggestion : Buy an extra tank, so when you change it you have plenty of time to exchange it and you always have a full tank handy... There is nothing more frustating than having to jump in your car during a party to rush at the Canadian Tire to get a new tank while steaks are getting cold in the BBQ...

:) :)

definitely charcoal, I am old school.

Gas is immediate, and convenient!

I would NEVER buy a gas grill. Steaks cooked on a gas grill taste nothing better than steaks broiled in the oven or sauteed in a pan to me. The only reason I grill is for the flavor and I've never tried a gas-cooked steak that tasted anywhere close to the delicious smoky taste of charcoal grilled. :thumbsup

If grilling on a gas grill was my only grilling option I'd either go out for steak or broil it in the oven.

grumpy 03-27-2004 03:53 PM

take a combined one. Weber has a combined one wich kicks ass.

baddog 03-27-2004 04:01 PM

with all due respect, you might as well be using an oven if you are cooking on gas.

Charcoal, and not just any charcoal . . . . Kingsford Charcoal :thumbsup

I let the Flames get to mine, so its not like oven Briling. and Yes Dave Its is convenient, that is why we use it all year. Cant see myself in the middle of a snow storm trying to fire up the charchoal :1orglaugh

Charcoal for the purist in me and the flavour.

Gas for the ease.

Gramps 03-27-2004 05:11 PM

Charcoal (mesquite) for the flavor but my new BBQ is gas and I love it. We just soak mesuite or maple wood pieces for 1/2 hour in water and toss them on the grill to the side of the steak and it gives them a great flavor.

Aaaah can't beat charcoal, brings out the flavour!!

Mind you we never get enough decent fucking weather here to have a barbie :(

MonsterMike 03-27-2004 06:08 PM

Charcoal takes too long to cool down before you can cook on it. I need to let the coals burn for 30 mins before I can cook on it. With gas, it's light and cook.

Huggles 03-27-2004 06:08 PM

Gas

Peaches 03-27-2004 06:11 PM

Charcoal. And I only use the hardwood charcoal - not those briquettes crap in the stores. I have to remind my Dad to pick up a bag when he gets his haircut because it's 100+ miles away from me, but I hate using anything else. :)

I might get a gas grill just for quick things, but I've been saying that for years and still haven't done it. :winkwink:

I used to do that as well from time to time, love the flavour of mesquite:thumbsup

spentrent 03-27-2004 06:14 PM

Can't beat charcoal. WOMEN use propane and propane accessories.

MuleScrote 03-27-2004 06:15 PM

Hamburgers and brats over charcoal.....YUMMY

:)

I just got done eating a fat sirloin out of my monster gas grill though...it's all in the preparation

You know, "women" in the figurative sense. I don't see many here in the basement.

HeebyJeeby 03-27-2004 06:19 PM

Food is about taste. Gas tastes like farts. Charcoal all the way.

Welcome to the nineties.

If you want to join the 21st century you can hard-pipe a connection from the natural
gas line so you have a gas output wherever the barBQ is located. Then no more
propane running out ½ way through cooking 15 steaks.

stephanie m. 03-27-2004 06:24 PM

charcoal

Joesho 03-27-2004 06:24 PM

nothing equals the good old fashioned charcol grill, ( I like to use alder wood, or some other hard woods to make a fire in mine, then cook over trhose, that is best....:2 cents:

you just need to learn to bbq is all.

There is direct and indirect heat, and if you use a Weber Kettle you can adjust the heat just fine

Living For Today 03-27-2004 06:26 PM

Charcoal??

Nothing beats a good old barby fueled by wood and newspaper! Sure the gas barbeques cook quicker and heat up quicker but hey it's just not as fun.

From a taste perspective I prefer wood coals, then charcoal, then gas.

I agree that gas is definately easier though. Homer Simpsom approved too!

I have one of those combos, they are great! I've also found that it's easier to clean up the charcoal ash than with a regular kettle grill. Just pop out the tray & empty into the trash.

It's also very convenient for attempting direct/indirect heating tricks.
