Is Anyone In Your Family, Other than You, Retarded?

Are there any mentally hanicapped people in your family? If not full blown retarded, how about downs? If yes, is it hard?

Well GFY is like family... So I guess the answer is yes...

My bro is a little slow, and I call him a retard.

But nuh, I think it would be really hard to be in a situation like that.

My aunt is retarded. She lives in a home where they take good care of her. She wasn't born that way, she got really sick when she was still just a toddler and it did irreversable damage.

It doesn't really make things to hard really, like I said, they take good care of her, and we get to celebrate holidays with her still.

Despite her "situation", it still makes her very happy to see us all, and she does get very cranky if a holiday goes by and we aren't able to pick her up or something.

She may be retarded, but she's aware of us, and misses us when we're not there. I'm not entirely sure why, but that makes me feel a little better... just knowing that she knows. Ya know?

That's a touching story, masked. :)

my oldest sister was a preemie baby, like 4 months premature, weighed some ridiculous amount, like a pound - they didn't think she'd survive, she was in hospital for 6 months and they had her on oxygen in the incubator - they gave her too much oxygen, there's a medical name for it i forget, and it blinded her in one eye and also effected her brain.

she's not retarded but on the very low end of normal intelligence, most people have no idea she's 'slow' because she grew up in a pretty smart family so she reads, writes and spells perfectly. Math is a lost cause - she's almost retarded when it comes to math and some other types of reasoning.

it's frustrating at times, she can go on and on about something and there's really no punchline or anything remotely interesting in her story. plus i have to help her with anything to do with technology - VCR, TV, computer etc - I've come close to chucking all her stuff off the balcony of her apartment on many occassion, it can be extremely frustrating.

Amazing thing is she has had a job since she was like 17, only unemployed once for about half a year. She makes about 45 grand a year. Which considering her mental abilities is almost a miracle. My parents were never sure she'd really be able to have a decent job.

She's much happier than me or my other sister. There is a lesson in it that most people never will learn.

Yeah I have often thought that it would be easier to be happy if you were not that bright. I just think too damn much, and am too aware of possibilities vs reality... or something like that anyway.

No, I am the only one! :)
