Are SUV's safer than regular cars?
Saw a special 2 days that said that cars are safe than suvs.
Their reasoning was that SUVS get into more roller over accidents and those are very fatal. But Im pretty sure that rollovers are only 3% of all accidents... so it does not make sense.. Im sure if a Hummer was to get into a head on collision with a small Peugot, the suv driver would be fine and the other one would not even be identifiable through his dental records |
that where you are wrong. The H2 doenst even rate 3 stars for safety.
|
its a generalisation.
depends on what SUV it is against what car liek your hummer scenario also i think it has a lot to do with the drivers in my town the majority of suv drivers are upperclass moms with 3 kids who drive an SUV because they feel "safer" but cant drive for shit (which is why the "need" a safe feeling car) and get in more accidents than the car drivers hehe I dunno - I feel just as safe in my merc as in a land rover |
|
most of modern suvs are much safer then regular cars
think bout it if small civic hatchback will get crashed and big suv what will be with driver in both cases? |
A car that looks more damaged is actually a safer car, its actually about the impact energy being absorbed by the materials crunching / impacting.:warning
|
I'll take my chances in a SUV over standard car anyday.

Look at it this way, if you are driving an SUV your chances of having an accident is way higher.
Shit for brakes, Shit for handling, people drive them faster because of the false senesce of security, and if you do make a mistake the chance of a roll over is very high. The best way to be safe is not to have an accident, if we are talking "On Road Conditions" I would rather take my chances driving a Accord, Camry, Bimmer whatever, then a station wagon jacked up in the air with big tires. Try this one out next time you are stuck in traffic due to an accident, take a look it always involves a Truck/SUV and they are usually on there side or roof. |

SUV's are so damn boring to drive for the most part. I guess if you live in the damn frozen tundra and need something BIG, than a BIG SUV is for you and is as safe as it's ratings say along with your driving style and of course 100's of other variables (like other poeples drving habits and weather conditions, etc). GET A CAR!!!! If you need awd, get an Audi or Volvo...way safer than prolly 99% of the suv's out there. |
You can get killed in anything! lol

The one thing I can tell you for sure is the quality of automobile makes a tremendous difference. Volvo is not a very popular car with the "big playa's and pimps" but I'll be damned if I hardly ever see anyone with a serious injury while driving one. BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, from a saftey standpoint areso far ahead of most other makes and it shows. Oh and I will damn sure take the civic, accord, saturn ion, over an explorer, excursion, tahoe, suburban EVERY day of the week. now if you drive like an asshole, it doesn't matter what your behind the wheel of. But if you drive like a responsible person sadly the make of car your driving will make a difference. |
That is head on, imagine a honda civic. I think the damage would be more.
|
SUVs have a tendancy of flipping over
|
From personal experience a dude I know got hit very seriously just coming off of a red light in his 3-series bmw by an SUV. Results, his car was totalled to shit, his injuries: NONE.
The woman in the SUV, her car damaged to shit, injuries: paralyzed from the waste down. SUV's arent safer but it also depends alot on make. Also dont forget the same materials are used for cars, just because an SUV is bigger doesnt mean its much stronger, its also more massive, so there is more force, all things working against you. |

SUVs are definitely more dangerous for the people GETTING HIT BY THEM.
that's for fucking sure. I hate SUV drivers.... almost more than taxi drivers... Yeah, you really need that 2 ton truck to get you from the suburbs to your office. Jackass! |
SUV's are often safer in a "passive sense," that is to say if you get hit, you might come out better off than somebody in a car. But, for the most part the SUV only _looks_ safer. It looks like a "tank" so people feel like they will be safe if they are hit.
However, SUV's are often built on the chasis (sp?) of a truck, so the handling is shit, brakes are shit, the response is shit. But, that "tank" feeling can make the driver who feels "safe" more likely to get into an accident. All in all it has a lot to do with the driver... Be very afraid of soccer moms and "big playas" who can't drive for shit in their SUVs. The January 12th edition of the New Yorker magazine has an excellent article about how SUVs suck. |
I hate SUV's. They are danerous for those of us in tiny cars. They are always trying to run me off the road because they don't see me way down there.
|
If you were going to be in a crash of ANY kind... what would you rather be driving.. A Naviagtor or a Honda?
|
The SUV is safer except in a roll-over accident, they have a much higher fatality rate than regular cars. However, you have to consider that in order to have a rollover you were driving too fast for conditions.
If you roll a vechile, you have no one to blame but yourself. Its not like someone can just pull out in front of you and you roll it. It takes a case of gross recklessness to roll anything. You have to be driving very unsafely to roll a vechile. |

You must REALLY be hating me :1orglaugh :1orglaugh |
it all depends on the type of accident, suv's are safer in certain areas as the same for normal cars
|
SUV drives here think they own the road here

that does'nt even look like a freeway or highway. How fast were they going? |
I feel much safer in my toyota celica then I would in a suv since I know it brakes very well, has great handling and i've yet to see one rolled. However just about every accident I see (and we have a shitload in southern cal) involves a suv and most times they are fliped/rolled.
Now if I was going to get in a head on crash, the suv would be my choice i think, but most people don't have that out here due to it being a side swip or rear end collision in which case a suv I dont think is any better. I've seen what happens to a f150 that gets hit from behind at 50mph it crumples like butter yet my toyota would do much better. |
SUVs suck from a safety standpoint since their body is alot stiffer to support the weight of the car.
They don't deform at all as well as more modern car designs. Despite the flashy design its just a truck body. |

but i think driver was ok in this accident we have accident in our city when vw polo with 100 mph has banged the tree the engine goes from the front part of the car through all car and people till its rear part all died in a second i think such thing will never happened if u will have suv u will have more chances to be alive |
A woman hit my Avalanche in her cavalier at 53 MPH. She hit me on the side while my car was stationary. Needless to say, her engine ended up on her lap while my car just needed it's doors replaced. If I had been in my Monte Carlo, I'd have probably been killed instantly.
I am a believer in my SUV, but then again I don't drive like an idiot. |

I saw the same special. They don't handle as well, roll over, and have problems stopping. No one needs anything that big. H2's look like fucking shoe boxes anyway. If you're not out in the desert at war, you don't fucking need one.

I think you'll be a lot safer inside a SUV
than in any other car. |
